Yale Holds Off Princeton 3-2
January 12, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Yale jumped to an early lead and then held off a late Princeton rally as the Bulldogs defeated the Princeton men's hockey team 3-2 on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Freshmen Cam MacIntyre and Dan Bartlett scored in the game for Princeton.
Yale outshot the Tigers 9-8 in the opening period and took the 1-0 lead midway through the period with a power-play goal at 10:12. Mark Arcobello carried the puck into the Tiger zone and shot through a screen to give the Bulldogs an early lead. Sean Backman and Will Engasser set up the score.
The lead went to 2-0 early in the second period when Ron Donald scored 1:16 into the period. Jean-Francois Boucher carried the puck into the Princeton zone and fed a cross-ice pass that Donald deflected in for the goal.
The Tigers cut the lead in half at 6:48 with a power-play goal while skating 4-on-3. Sophomore Lee Jubinville took an initial shot that was stopped by Yale goaltender Alec Richards, but MacIntyre collected the rebound and scored his fourth goal of the season. Senior Brett Westgarth also had an assist on the goal.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a fortuitous bounce to take a 3-1 lead late in the period. Backman skated into the zone on a 2-on-1 and tried to pass across. His pass was blocked but as Princeton netminder Zane Kalemba slid along with the pass, it bounced off the Tiger defender and slid into the net for the Yale goal.
Princeton charged out of the gates looking to get back into the game in the third period and controlled play the whole period, outshooting Yale 13-4 in the stanza. The Tigers moved within a goal at 13:22 when Bartlett scored his fifth of the season on a strong individual effort. He picked off a clearing pass at the blue live, then stickhandled through two defenders before putting a shot past Richards.
Princeton pulled Kalemba late looking to even the game, but was unable to score the equalizer.
The Tigers fell to 8-9-2 overall and 5-7-1 in the league with the loss, while Yale is now 8-6-2 overall and 5-4-0 in league play. Princeton completes its weekend tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against Brown.
