Goeckner-Zoeller Lifts Princeton to Overtime Win
January 13, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored his second goal of the night 1:29 into overtime to lift the Princeton men's hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win over Brown on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton never trailed in the win as the Tigers won their third-straight overtime game and climbed to the .500 mark at 9-9-2.
The Tigers controlled play from the onset, out shooting Brown 42-22 for the game and 16-6 in the opening period. Goeckner-Zoeller had the first real good scoring chance of the game, but was stoned on the doorstep by Brown's Dan Rosen, starting a trend on the night as Rosen stopped 39 of the 42 shots he saw.
Senior Daryl Marcoux snapped a long goalless streak at 14:41 when he gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Freshman Kevin Kaiser drove to the net and took a backhand shot that Rosen stopped, but the rebound came to an opening on the opposite side, where Marcoux, charging in the from the blue line scored with a hot to the upper corner. Senior Kevin Westgarth also tallied an assist on the goal, working down low.
The Tigers seemed content to enter the locker room with the one-goal lead, but Brown garnered an odd-man rush in transition and scored when Matt Vokes shot eluded Tiger senior netminder B.J. Sklapsky. Jeff Prough assisted on the goal.
Princeton regained the lead just 1:16 into the second period when Goeckner-Zoeller scored his first of the night and his fifth of the season. Sophomore Brett Wilson fed him the puck in the Brown zone and he picked the upper far corner with a perfect shot to put Princeton ahead 2-1. Freshman Cam Macintyre also had an assist on the goal.
The scored remained 2-1 entering the third period and stayed that way until Prough scored on a drive to the net with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Regulation ended tied up at 2-2 and the teams headed to overtime for the third-straight game in the series, as the teams skated to a pair of tied last season.
In overtime the Tigers took advantage of a bad change as the Bears were whistled for having too many skaters on the ice. Skating a man up, sophomore Mike Moore took the puck into the zone where he fed Wilson, who got the puck down low for Goeckner-Zoeller, who buried his sixth shot of the night to hand Princeton the win.
Sklapsky finished the night with 20 saves as he climbed to 2-2-0 on the season. Rosen had 39 saves in the loss.
Princeton is now 9-9-2 overall and 6-7-1 in the ECACHL, while Brown falls to 7-7-2 overall and 3-6-1 in league play.
Next up for the Tigers is the two-week exam break. Princeton returns to the ice on Monday, Jan. 29 at home against Robert Morris.
