Robert Morris Rallies By Princeton 3-1
January 29, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Robert Morris scored three unanswered goals in the third period to rally for a 3-1 win over the Princeton men's hockey team on Monday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Sophomore Lee Jubinville gave Princeton a 1-0 lead with 30 seconds left in the second period.
Princeton started the game with a jump in its step, garnering the game's first four shots before the Colonials were able to register their first shot. Princeton's best chance of the first period came when senior Darroll Powe came into the RMU zone on a breakaway. Powe chose to shoot high on the glove side of Colonial goaltender Christian Boucher, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar and the game remained scoreless. Robert Morris had the better of the chances later in the opening period and outshot the Tigers 10-6 in the period.
The second period was similar to the first period with each team getting good scoring chances. Princeton finished the period with a 13-11 shot edge and nearly jumped on the scoreboard late in the period when sophomore Brett Wilson's shot from the off-wing went through the legs of Boucher but hit the back of his skate and bounced wide of the net.
Princeton did jump on the scoreboard at 19:30 of the second period when Jubinville followed his own rebound and placed a shot inside the top right corner. Powe worked the puck to Jubinville, whose first shot from the face-off dot was blocked. Jubinville collected the loose puck and scored his seventh goal of the season. Freshman Mark Magnowski also assisted on the goal.
The Colonials evened the score 7:01 into the third period when Sean Berkstresser scored on the rebound of a shot from Aaron Clarke. The game stayed even for seven minutes before Ryan Cruthers scored his first of two power-play goals 45 seconds apart. With two Princeton players in the penalty box, Chris Kaufman took a point shot that slid through Princeton freshman netminder Zane Kalemba. As the puck slid through the crease, Cruthers lunged at the puck and nudged it over the goal line just before a Tiger stick tried to pull it back out.
Cruthers added an insurance goal for the Colonials 45 seconds later. Berkstresser fed him the puck and he circled behind the Tiger goal, before finding a hole to shoot at on the short side.
Princeton had two later power-play chances and pulled Kalemba for the extra-attacker, but could not put another goal on the board and the game ended at 3-1.
Boucher made 31 saves for the win, including 13 in the third as Princeton outshot RMU 32-27. Kalemba made 24 saves in the loss.
Princeton falls to 9-10-2 with the loss and looks to get back in the win column with league games this weekend at Brown and Yale.
