Women's Class Of 2007 Honored During Swimming/Diving Win Over Dartmouth
January 28, 2007 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Head coach Susan Teeter and her talented Class of 2007 hope that Sunday's 219-74 victory over Dartmouth is a sign of things to come at DeNunzio Pool. Her Tigers stayed perfect in the Ivy League during Sunday's home win, and they were also able to honor the 11 members of the Class of 2007, which has won two Ivy League titles and will go for a third crown in three weeks.
A meet that featured several non-traditional events opened with a Dartmouth win in the 275 medley relay, but Princeton wasted no time taking control in the individual events. Ellen Gray, hero of the 2006 Ivy League championship win, edged out teammate Alex Wiley to win the 400 free in 3:54.45, and teammate Lisa Hamming also won a close showdown with Kristen Arey to win the 100 back in 1:00.25.
Freshman phenom Alicia Aemisegger won her first of three events by taking the 100 breast in 1:04.67; she later claimed the 50 back in 28.53 and the 200 IM in 2:05.04. Sophomore Justina DiFazio was another multi-event winner, claiming the 50 free in 24.65 and the 100 fly in 57.98.
Princeton's first diving win of the day came via Katie Giarra, who took the 1-meter competition with 286.88 points. That score topped the second-place score of 253.42 put forth by Sheby Rudd. Giarra later claimed the 3-meter competition with 327.16 points, while senior Michelle DeMond finished second with 304.42 points. Peggy Kearns and DeMond finished 1-2 in the exhibition platform competition.
Princeton won the 600 free relay in 5:49.44, and Arey avenged her close loss earlier in the day with a winning time of 53.23 in the 100 free. Fellow senior Erica Pang won the 50 breast in 31.54, and Hamming claimed another double win with her victory in the 200 free (1:53.99). The meet ended with Princeton winning the 300 free relay in 2:26.26.
Princeton will remain in the friendly confines of DeNunzio Pool for two critical February meets, the H-Y-P showdown on Feb. 2-3 and the 2007 Ivy League Championships on Feb. 15-17. The senior class, which was honored during the meet, will be looking for Ivy title No. 3 during its four-year career; that senior class consists of Kristen Arey, Jeannie Campbell-Urban, Michelle DeMond, Sobenna George, Kelly Hannigan, Nikki Laffel, Erica Pang, Susan Skros, Emma Tapscott, Emily Weigand and Sandy Zaeh.
