Tigers Fall to No. 35 FIU in Women's Tennis, 4-3
January 28, 2007 | Women's Tennis
In a tight match played Sunday afternoon in Miami, the Princeton women's tennis team came up on the short end of a 4-3 decision against 35th-ranked Florida International at the University Park courts.
The Tigers trailed 3-1 during singles play and looked like they had a chance to make a comeback when Blakely Ashley came from behind to defeat Maria Pazo 6-2 in the third set. But FIU's Shilla D'Armas then came back from a deficit in the second set to defeat Princeton's Sarah Huah at No. 4, 6-1 and 7-5, to clinch the match for the Golden Panthers.
Princeton's first singles win came from Melissa Saiontz, who easily dispensed of FIU's Paula Zabala by scores of 6-1 and 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. Ivana King won a 10-point proset for the Tigers at No. 3 after splitting sets after FIU had clinched the match overall.
In doubles, FIU won all three matches to win the point, but the Nos. 2 and 3 matches were close ones. King and Saiontz led 7-5 at No. 2 before falling by a 9-7 score, while Ashley and Hugh dropped an 8-5 decision at the No. 3 spot.
The Tigers, who played their second straight nationally-ranked team after falling to No. 5-ranked Miami on Saturday, next play Feb. 9 when they host East Tennessee State at Jadwin Gym.
