This Week's Storylines
Race to the Finish
The Princeton men's hockey team and the other 11 teams in the ECAC Hockey League begin the month-long eight-game race to the postseason this weekend. Princeton's stretch starts on the road at Brown and Yale this weekend.
Log Jam
The ECAC Hockey League standings are tight entering the final month of the regular season. The teams currently ranked fourth through 12th in the league standings are separated by five points. The Tigers find themselves right in the middle, currently tied for fifth, two points out of fourth and three points ahead of 12th.
Last Time Out
The Tigers played their first game in 15 days on Monday night when they hosted Robert Morris at Baker Rink. Sophomore Lee Jubinville gave Princeton a 1-0 lead late in the second period, but the Colonials scored three third period goals to pull off a 3-1 win.
The Last 10
With Princeton's loss to Robert Morris, the Tigers are now 6-4 in their last 10 games. Princeton began the season 1-6-1 before earning three points Thanksgiving weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard. Since that weekend Princeton is 9-4-1. That stretch includes a win over Brown and a loss to Yale.
Win Number 9
Princeton's win against Brown three weeks ago was its ninth of the season and came in its 20th game. Last season Princeton won 10 games with the 10th win coming in its 23rd game. The Tigers' next win will match last season's win total.
The .500 Mark
Princeton's loss to Robert Morris dropped the Tigers a game under .500. Princeton has reached .500 three times this season and has lost its next game. Both times the Tigers won the next game to climb back to .500. The third game comes Friday at Brown.
Two or More Goals
Princeton was held to a single goal on Monday against Robert Morris, marking only the second time this season that Princeton has been held to less than two goals. The first came in a home loss to Quinnipiac in early January.
Too Close for Comfort
If it seems like most Princeton games come down to a single goal, it is because they do. Fourteen of Princeton's 21 games this season have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie, including both games of Princeton's last league weekend. Of the other seven games, six were decided by two goal margins and one had a four goal margin. Three of the two-goal games featured empty-net goals.
Home Stretch
Monday night's game concluded a stretch where Princeton played eight of nine games at home from mid-December until now. Princeton was 6-3 in those nine games and 5-3 at home in the span. Princeton remaining eight games are split evenly between home and the road.
Recent Trips to Overtime
Princeton's win over Brown marked its third-straight win in overtime after being winless in its previous 27 trips to overtime. Princeton is unbeaten in its last four trips to the extra session, tying Dartmouth on the road on Nov. 24, the edging Union, Nebraska-Omaha and Brown in overtime at home.
More Overtime Thoughts
Princeton's trip to overtime against Brown was its seventh overtime game of the season, matching the Tigers total of last season. Princeton is 3-2-2 in overtime this year, and was 0-4-3 in overtime last year.
The Opponents
The Series With Brown
Princeton trails its all-time series with Brown 53-77-6 and is 24-41-2 in the series in Providence. The Tigers and Bears have gone to overtime in their last three meetings, with two ties last season and a Princeton win earlier this season. Princeton is unbeaten in its last two trips to Brown, winning 5-2 two seasons ago and playing to a 3-3 tie last year.
Scouting the Bears
Brown is 8-9-4 overall and 4-8-2 in the ECACHL entering the weekend. Since its game with Princeton on Jan. 13, the Bears have played two league weekends, taking three of four points at Colgate and Cornell, before being swept at home last weekend by Union and Rensselaer.
The Last Meeting
Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime to lift Princeton to a 3-2 win over Brown on Jan. 13, 2007 at Baker Rink. Senior Daryl Marcoux scored the other Tiger goal while Jeff Prough had two points for Brown.
The Series With Yale
Princeton and Yale have met 223 times over the years in a series that dates back to 1901. Yale leads the all-time series 118-96-9 and holds a 58-26-3 at home. The teams have split their games in each of the past three seasons with each team winning in the other team's building last year.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale brings a 8-10-3 overall record into the weekend and is 5-8-1 in ECACHL play. Since skating at Princeton on Jan. 12, the Bulldogs are winless in five games, falling to Quinnipiac, Colgate, Rensselaer and Union, and tying Colgate.
The Last Meeting
Yale jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 3-1, then held off Princeton in the third as the Tigers came back within a goal for a 3-2 final score. Princeton freshmen Cam MacIntyre and Dan Bartlett scored for Princeton.
Non-League Schedule Update
Princeton finished its non-league schedule at 3-3-1 following the Robert Morris game. The Tigers opened the year with a tie and loss to Bentley, split with Alabama-Huntsville in early December and swept Nebraska-Omaha and Minnesota State. Princeton finished at .500 in non-league play for the first time since the 1998-99 season when Princeton was 5-2 in non-league games.
Team Notes
Home and Away
Princeton is 5-6-0 on its home ice this season, is 4-4-1 on the road and is 0-0-1 at neutral sites. Princeton has four home games and four road games remaining.
Ranked Teams
Princeton's win against Quinnipiac on Jan. 9 was its second win of the season over a ranked team. The Tigers are 2-2-1 in their five games against ranked teams, defeating Clarkson and Quinnipiac, losing to Cornell and Quinnipiac and tying Dartmouth. Clarkson, ranked 11th at the time, is the highest ranked team Princeton has played. No. 20 Cornell, No. 17 St. Lawrence and No. 8 Clarkson remain on the Tigers schedule this season.
Special Teams
Twenty-seven of Princeton's 63 goals this season have come on special teams. Princeton has 24 power-play goals and three shorthanded goals this season.
Staying Out of the Box
Princeton is the fourth-least penalized team in the nation, averaging 12.7 penalty minutes per game and the least penalized team in the ECAC Hockey League. Princeton is averaging three penalties less per game this season than last and the Tigers average has dropped following each of the last six games. Here is a list of the five least penalized teams in the nation.
| 56 | Princeton | 12.9 |
| 57 | Massachusetts | 12.0 |
| 58 | St. Cloud State | 11.3 |
| 59 | UMass-Lowell | 10.4 |
With a Two Man Advantage
Princeton converted on its first 5-on-3 power play in the Rensselaer win. The Tigers had been held goalless in nine previous chances, but had allowed five two-man advantage goals. Princeton also scored with the two-man advantage against Minnesota State and is now 2-for-12 in 5-on-3s while opponents are 6-for-12 against Princeton.
Lots of Shots
Princeton outshot Robert Morris on Monday night, making it three games in a row outshooting its opponent. Princeton has outshot 15 of 21 opponents this season, been outshot four times and had shots even twice. Last season Princeton outshot its opponents in 13 of 31 games. Princeton had 42 shots in the Brown win, marking the fifth time this season the Tigers have put 40 or more shots on goal.
Spreading the Puck Around
Princeton has received points this season from 20 of its 24 skaters. Eighteen different players have scored goals and 18 players have tallied assists. Every player that has appeared in at least half the games has recorded a point.
Scoring More…
Princeton has scored 81 goals in each of the past two seasons. Last season the Tigers did it despite the graduation of two of its top-three scorers from the previous season. That number is 19 more than the total of 62 that Princeton scored in 31 games two seasons ago. Princeton is on pace to score 93 goals in 31 games this year.
Individual Notes
Topping the Charts
Sophomore Lee Jubinville scored Princeton's lone goal in Monday's loss to Robert Morris. Jubinville currently sits atop the Tiger scoring charts with 18 points. He has seven goals and 11 assists in 19 games.
