Men's Squash Remains Unbeaten, Routs Penn 9-0
January 31, 2007 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team may not have Yasser El Halaby anymore, but it made a powerful statement Wednesday night in its 2007 debut; the Tigers have set their sights very high this season. A talented Penn squad came into the Jadwin Squash Courts with hopes of breaking into the Ivy League race, and it left having won only two of 29 games. A lineup featuring seven underclassmen, including three sophomores and two freshmen in five of the top six spots, swept the Quakers and will now face a solid Yale team this Saturday in New Haven, Conn.
Princeton moved to 5-0, 3-0 in the Ivy League, with the 9-0 win over Penn. The Tigers have yet to drop an individual match against any Ivy League rival this season. The top three were their typical dominant selves, with No. 1 player Mauricio Sanchez leading the way with a 9-5, 9-2, 9-3 win over Gilly Lane, one of the nation's top players. Hesham El Halaby, playing at No. 2 for the first time, won 9-3, 9-3, 9-6, while Kimlee Wong also cruised to a 3-0 win at No. 3.
Freshmen Santiago Imberton and David Canner each won at Nos. 5 and 6, while their senior teammates, Preston Comey and Michael Gilman, picked up wins at Nos. 7 and 8. Juniors Vincent Yu and Tom McKay picked up Princeton's other two wins. The overall team victory is a strong sign for head coach Bob Callahan, who has had to wait nearly two full months between nine-man team matches. He won't have such a wait again this season, as the men enter the critical February month with upcoming matches against Yale, Harvard and Trinity before the national team finals. The Bulldogs will be the first opponent; Princeton dropped a 5-4 decision to the Bulldogs in the regular season but came back with an 8-1 win in the national team semifinals.
