This Week's Storylines
The New Year
The Princeton men's hockey team opens 2007 with an exhibition game and an ECAC Hockey League game the first weekend of January. The Tigers host the U.S. National Under-18 Team on Friday night before hosting Quinnipiac on Saturday in the front end of a home-and-home series between the travel partners.
Last Time Out
Princeton returned from its three-week holiday layoff by sweeping Nebraska-Omaha and Minnesota State in non-league play at Baker Rink. The wins ran Princeton's win streak to four games and moved the Tigers to 6-1-1 in their last eight games.
On a Roll
Princeton has swept its last two weekends, downing Nebraska-Omaha and Minnesota State last weekend and Union and Rensselaer before the break. The Tigers picked up a win and a tie in their previous league weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard and have earned seven of a possible eight points in the last two league weekends.
Four Straight Wins
Princeton's four-game winning streak is its longest since the 1998-99 Tigers defeated Vermont, Army, Cornell and Colgate in January of 1999. Princeton last won five-straight games came at the onset of the 1947-48 season.
Reaching .500
Princeton recent 6-1-1 run has moved Princeton back to the .500 mark after starting the season 1-6-1. Princeton has not been at or above .500 at this point of the season since the 1998-99 Tigers were 9-2-1 at the turn of the year.
Winning Late
Both of Princeton's wins last weekend involved late game heroics. On Friday night against Nebraska-Omaha, after UNO rallied to tie the game, Lee Jubinville scored 43 seconds into overtime to lift Princeton to the win. A night later, Minnesota State scored twice in the third period to tie the game at 3-3, but with 48 seconds left in the game Cam MacIntyre scored to put Princeton ahead by the final margin.
Tournament Win, Well Kind Of
Even though it wasn't scheduled as a holiday tournament, Princeton's weekend played out that way. On the first night, Princeton edged Nebraska-Omaha and Minnesota State edged Yale. The following night the two winners met with Princeton winning at Baker Rink, and the two losing teams met at Yale and skated to a 4-4 tie.
Too Close for Comfort
If it seems like most Princeton games come down to a single goal, it is because they do. Twelve of Princeton's 16 games this season have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie. Of the other four games, three were decided by two goal margins and one had a four goal margin. Both games last weekend were decided by a single goal.
Exorcise the Demons
Princeton's overtime win against Union was the Tigers first overtime win in its last 27 trips to an extra session. The Tigers won their secodn-straight trip to overtime two games later when Lee Jubinville scored in overtime to defeat Nebraska-Omaha last weekend. Princeton was 0-14-13 in the 27-game span.
Home Stretch
This weekend's games conclude a six-game homestand for the Tigers. Princeton visits Quinnipiac on Tuesday night, then plays its next three game back at Baker Rink.
The Opponents
The Series With the U.S. Under-18 Team
Princeton has hosted the U.S. National Under-18 Team on two occasions since the National Team Development Program was created 10 years ago. Princeton hosted the U-18 team in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 season and won both games, picking up a 3-1 win the first season and a 5-3 win the second time out. Eight Tigers on the current roster played in the 5-3 game, with Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and B.J. Mackasey each record two assists. Brett Westgarth and Max Cousins each added an assist.
Scouting the Under-18 Team
The U.S. Under-18 Team is 8-7-2 this season against NCAA competition and 4-7-2 against Division I teams. The team has wins at Alaska, Michigan State, Clarkson and Lake Superior State this season. Clarkson, which they defeated 6-2, is the only opponent that Princeton and the Under-18 team share this season. The rest of the Under-18 teams schedule is comprised of teams from the North American Hockey League and from international competition.
Exhibition Info
Princeton won its first exhibition game of this season 3-2 in overtime against McGill University. The Tigers scored a shorthanded goal and two power-play goals in the game. Max Cousins led things with a goal and an assist and Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and Brett Wilson scored the other goals.
The Series With Quinnipiac
Princeton and Quinnipiac met for the first time last season as each team picked up a win on the road. Quinnipiac won the series opener at Baker Rink 3-2 on a goal with 1:06 remaining in regulation and four days later, Princeton won 6-3 thanks to a three-point performance from Brandan Kushniruk in a game played at Yale.
Scouting the Bobcats
Quinnipiac is 8-4-4 overall and 5-2-3 in the ECAC Hockey League entering this weekend. The Bobcats sit atop the ECACHL standings and are also ranked 16th in the latest USCHO.com poll. Quinnipiac has not played in nearly a month since defeating Union on Dec. 9. The Bobcats carry a three-game unbeaten streak into the weekend having beaten Union and tying Rensselaer and Dartmouth in its previous games. Quinnipiac hosts RIT on Thursday night.
Non-League Schedule Update
Princeton is 3-2-1 in non-league play this season following last weekend's sweep. The Tigers opened the year with a tie and loss to Bentley and split with Alabama-Huntsville in early December. Robert Morris is Princeton's last non-league opponent of this season and the teams meet on Jan. 29 at Baker Rink. Last season Princeton was 3-4-0 in non-league play, defeating UAH, Notre Dame and Denver.
Who is Left?
Minnesota State will became the 51st of a possible 58 NCAA Division I opponents that Princeton has faced. Last season Princeton faced two new opponents in Quinnipiac and Robert Morris. Princeton has not faced Canisius, Connecticut, Ferris State, Mercyhurst, Northern Michigan, RIT, and Sacred Heart.
