Men's Soccer Runs By Columbia, 2-0, Improves To 1-1 In Ivy League
October 13, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Princeton used a Kyle McHugh goal in the final minute of the first half as the springboard to a dominating second half and a 2-0 victory against Columbia in an Ivy League men's soccer game played Saturday afternoon at Powers Field.
After McHugh played give-and-go with Brandon Busch with 50 seconds left in the first half, giving the Tigers (3-7-1, 1-1 Ivy) a halftime lead, Princeton didn't let up in the second half, outshooting the Lions (2-7-1, 0-2 Ivy) 13-1 in the final 45 minutes.
The Tigers would cement the game with just less than four minutes left, when Ben Harms sent a ball over the top of the Lions' defense to Devin Muntz, who stayed onside and got behind the defenders. He then had a two-on-one opportunity with McHugh, who sent a shot into an open net to make it 2-0.
"I thought we did a nice job in responding to a difficult loss last week at Brown," said Princeton coach Jim Barlow. "We had a lot of energy and intensity at every position and kept it throughout the game."
Princeton outshot the Lions 22-6 overall and had seven of the game's 10 corner kicks. Columbia stayed within one goal for most of the second half thanks to goalie Michael Testa, who had eight saves on those 22 Princeton shots.
The Tigers extended their unbeaten streak against Columbia to four consecutive years and also extended their home unbeaten streak to four games this season.
In addition to his assist on McHugh's second goal, Muntz had a team-high six shots, including on in the second half that hit the crossbar and another in the first half on which Testa made a nice diving save.
Columbia's best chance came just four minutes into the game, when Bayo Adafin got behind the defense after a nice pass from the back, but his left-footed shot was right of the goal past Princeton goalkeeper Sean Lynch.
Lynch had two saves, both in the first half, to earn his third shutout in seven games this season.
The Tigers visit St. John's for a non-conference game Wednesday night (7:30 p.m.) before heading to nationally-ranked Harvard Saturday. Game time in Cambridge is 2:30 p.m. as part of a Princeton-Harvard soccer doubleheader that begins with the women's game at noon.
