Men's Soccer Visits St. John's Wednesday Night
October 16, 2007 | Men's Soccer
The final non-conference game of the season for the Princeton men's soccer team comes Wednesday night in the form of regionally-ranked St. John's, which has seen three of its four losses come against teams currently ranked in the top seven in the country. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Belson Stadium in Queens.
Princeton (3-7-1), which defeated Columbia Saturday afternoon, will look to return the favor against a St. John's squad that earned a 1-0 win against the Tigers at Lourie-Love Field a season ago. St. John's (6-4-3) will look for its fifth straight shutout. The Red Storm hasn't allowed a goal in more than 400 minutes since falling to top-ranked UConn Sept. 28.
The Tigers got the fourth and fifth goals of the season from senior captain Kyle McHugh on the way to the 2-0 victory against Columbia, which improved Princeton to 1-1 in the Ivy League. McHugh scored with just 50 seconds left in the first half and then with under four minutes remaining in the second half to help the Tigers extend their unbeaten streak against the Lions to five straight seasons.
Princeton outshot Columbia 22-6 in that game, including 13-1 in the second half.
St. John's played to a scoreless tie with Big East rival Louisville Saturday night at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm, No. 7 in this week's NSCAA Northeast regional rankings, also have losses against No. 5 Virginia Tech and No. 7 Virginia earlier this season in addition to the UConn result.
The Tigers and Red Storm were scoreless for more than 87 minutes at Lourie-Love Field last season before St. John's Patrik Engstrom bent a long free kick into the net to give his team a victory. The game was suspended for more than hour midway through the first half due to a heavy thunderstorm in the Princeton area.
The teams are playing for just the third time. In addition to last season's meeting, the Tigers defeated the Red Storm 1-0 in 1995 in a game played at Rutgers.
Princeton's final five games this season are Ivy League games, beginning Saturday afternoon at 2006 Ivy champion and 11th-ranked Harvard. Game time at Harvard's Ohiri Field is 2:30 p.m., following the Princeton-Harvard women's soccer game beginning at noon.
