Kaiser Scores Two in Men's Hockey Exhibition Win
October 20, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Sophomore Kevin Kaiser scored two goals as the Princeton men's hockey team defeated Trois-Rivieres in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton scored two goals in the final four minutes of the game to pull out the win.
After Trois-Rivieres took a 1-0 lead with a rebound goal at 4:13 of the first period, the Tigers drew even when Kaiser scored on the power play at 9:29. Kaiser received a pass from senior Erik Pridham along the wall and skated towards the net then shot to even the score. Senior Kyle Hagel also assisted on the goal. The tie lasted three minutes before Mathieu Gravel scored a power-play goal for the Patriotes, who took a 2-1 lead to lockerroom.
Princeton came out strong in the second period and scored two goals in a four-minute span to take a 3-2 lead. First at 3:12, sophomore Jody Pederson picked off an up-ice pass and skated into the Patriote zone and fired a shot that beat UQTR goaltender Sylvain Michaud. The Tigers made it 3-2 4:22 later when freshman Taylor Fedun fired a rebound into the Patriote net. Sophomore Cam MacIntyre took the initial shot, which was stopped by Michaud, but the rebound went straight to Fedun who buried it into the open net. The period ended tied a 3-3 as Gravel scored his second goal of the game with 3:32 left in the second.
The game remained tied through most of the third period before senior Keith Shattenkirk scored the go-ahead goal with 3:19 remaining. Pederson got the puck at the point from sophomore Dan Bartlett. Pederson took a point shot that Michaud couldn't handle, and the puck bounced to Shattenkirk for the goal. Princeton added an insurance goal 1:14 later when Kaiser scored on his own rebound, following a pass from Hagel.
All three Tiger goaltenders played in the game, with sophomore Zane Kalemba making eight saves and earning the win. Junior Thomas Sychterz made 11 saves in the first period and freshman Alan Reynolds made five in the seconds. Princeton outshot Trois-Rivieres 35-27.
The Tigers open the regular season next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. when they visit Yale for a non-conference game as part of the Shootout at Ingalls. Princeton will play an exhibition game the next afternoon against the Ontario Institute of Technology.
