Men's Soccer Opens Ivy League Season At Brown Saturday Night
October 04, 2007 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team is headed in the right direction as it heads to Providence for its Ivy League opener against 15th-ranked Brown Saturday night, with a three-game unbeaten streak that is its longest since early last season and the confidence that comes from scoring six times in its last two games.
Game time at Brown's Stevenson Field is 7 p.m. in the second game of a Princeton-Brown soccer doubleheader. The women's soccer game between the Tigers and the Bears begins at 4 p.m.
The Tigers (2-6-1) defeated Adelphi 4-3 in overtime Wednesday night at Powers Field, with senior captain Kyle McHugh scoring his second goal of the game 6:40 into the first overtime to give Princeton a victory. The Tigers led 3-1 at halftime after McHugh scored on a header just less than three minutes before the end of the first half.
Princeton's three-game unbeaten streak also includes a 2-0 win against FDU last Sunday and a scoreless tie against regionally-ranked Monmouth last Thursday in the first two games of a three-game homestand.
Brown (6-1-1), also ranked second in the Northeast region, was unbeaten in its first seven games before losing at home to Boston University by a 1-0 score Tuesday night. Dylan Sheehan and Kevin Davies have combined to score 12 of the Bears' 14 goals this season.
McHugh now has a team-high three goals this season for Princeton, while sophomore Max Hare and freshman Teddy Schneider each have two goals. The Tigers have now scored 11 times in their last six games after going without a goal in their first three games this season.
At least five freshmen have started for the Tigers in each of the team's last five games, including goalkeeper Sean Lynch and defenders Ben Burton and Josh Walburn. Classmate Brandon Busch has also been a sparkplug for the Tiger attack both in a starting role and off the bench.
Brown came from behind to defeat the Tigers in overtime at Lourie-Love Field last season, getting the tying goal with nine minutes left in regulation and the game winner seven minutes into overtime after Princeton had gone ahead 1-0 early in the game on the first career goal by defender Robbie Morgenroth.
The Tigers are looking to end a two-game losing skid to the Bears and for their first win at Stevenson Field since the Ivy championship season of 2001.
Seven of Princeton's final eight games are Ivy League games, with the lone non-conference match coming at St. John's Oct. 17. The Tigers play their Ivy home opener next Saturday against Collumbia at Powers Field.
