November 13, 2007 | Men's Fencing
DALLAS, Texas -- Freshman fencer Nathaniel Sulat won the junior epee competition at the North American Cup held Nov. 9-12 in Dallas, Texas, topping a field of 244 competitors.
The win in the under-20 group awards Sulat a substantial amount of points toward qualifying to represent the U.S. team at the Junior World Championships in Catania, Italy in April 2008. The team will be decided in February.
"This is a big step for him toward qualifying for the Junior World Championships," Princeton coach Zoltan Dudas said. "Top collegiate fencers from all over the United States and Canada were at this meet."
Four juniors will qualify in each weapon, and according to the U.S. Fencing Association's junior epee point standings heading into the North American Cup, Sulat's point total stood fifth. Another Tiger freshman, Graham Wicas, is atop the list and fellow '11 Mike Elfassy is 13th.
Sulat is 10th on the senior list, which includes Princeton alumni Soren Thompson '05 (second) and Ben Solomon '06 (fifth) and current Tiger fencers Tommi Hurme '08 (13th), Wicas (17th) and Elfassy (24th).
Princeton's fencing season will begin this weekend at the Penn State Garret Open.
