Men's Soccer Closes Out 2007 At Dartmouth Looking For Fourth Ivy Win
November 15, 2007 | Men's Soccer
A slow start to 2007 did a number on the Princeton men's soccer team's chance for a winning season. But the Tigers still have the chance at a winning Ivy League season as they head to Dartmouth for their season finale at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Princeton (5-9-2, 3-3 Ivy) also heads to Hanover in search of a second straight Ivy road victory, one that would give the Tigers four Ivy wins for the first time since the 2001 Ivy championship season. Princeton won at Penn two weeks ago by a 1-0 score.
Dartmouth (10-4-2, 4-1-1 Ivy) fell short of an Ivy title after a 1-0 loss to league champion Brown last week but looks like a good bet to make the NCAA tournament as an at-large selection. The Big Green have been particularly stingy on the defensive end in 2007, allowing just three goals in six Ivy games and nine goals in 16 games total this season.
The Tigers beat Dartmouth last season 1-0 at Lourie-Love Field, getting a late first-half goal from Kyle McHugh for the game winner.
McHugh has had a standout year in his final season in a Princeton uniform and is a likely All-Ivy choice thanks to his team-leading seven goals and outstanding all-around play. Along with fellow co-captain Matt Kontos, McHugh leads a large Princeton senior class of eight playing their final game on Saturday.
Kontos has been a four-year starter on defense for Princeton, while fellow defender David Metcalf has been a stalwart on the Princeton back line in 2007 and classmate Robbie Morgenroth a big factor on defense throughout his Tiger career.
Dan Cummins has displayed outstanding goal-scoring ability in his final two years as a Tiger, while Ted Wolfson has started for Princeton at both attack and midfield. Both Mike Jester and Victor Noskov have contributed to the Tigers throughout their careers before suffering injuries that limited their play this season.
Princeton's schedule for 2008 has yet to be announced, but the Tigers will be playing their home games on the new Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium after spending the 2007 season playing at Powers Field at Princeton Stadium. The Tigers finished 4-3-1 this season on the FieldTurf at the stadium.
