Women's Swimming/Diving Sweeps Penn, Cornell To Open Ivy Season
November 17, 2007 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Ellen Gray and Alicia Aemisegger both won two events apiece to lead the Princeton women's swimming and diving teams to a pair of wins in Philadelphia over Penn and Cornell. Princeton, the two-time defending Ivy League champions, defeated Penn 184-113 and Cornell 204-93.
Princeton opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:46.05. The team of Meredith Monroe, Alicia Aemisegger, Justina DiFazio and Megan Waters earned the win, while the team of Julie Kochman, Courtney Kilkuts, Emily Trautner and Suzanne Rossi placed third in 1:50.19.
Gray began the individual event session by winning the 1000 free in 10:03.71, a time nearly 20 full seconds faster than any of her opponents. Princeton's Lauren Benjamin finished second in 10:23.08. Aemisegger followed with the first half of her double, a victory in the 200 free. The 2007 All-America selection won in 1:49.45, while Monroe took second in 1:49.45.
Sophomore Courtney Kilkuts won the 100 breast in 1:06.86 and Monika Friedman continued her impressive start by winning the 200 fly in 2:06.13. Waters, one member of a strong freshman class, took the 50 free in 24.51, .05 of a second faster than DiFazio. It wouldn't take long for DiFazio, a multiple-time Ivy champion, to bounce back, as she won the 100 free over Waters with a time of 52.91.
The 1-meter diving competition was won by Gayle Rudofsky, who barely edged teammate Carolyn Littlefield by less than half of a point. Rudofsky scored 229.60 points, while Littlefield scored 229.35 points.
Aemisegger and Gray completed their doubles late in the session. Aemisegger won the 200 breast with a time of 2:16.74, while Gray claimed the 500 in 4:58.35, just ahead of freshman Nicole McAndrew's time of 5:01.89.
Princeton will compete in the annual Big Al Open from Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
