Quinnipiac Tops Princeton 5-2
November 21, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Quinnipiac's top line combined for 11 points as the Bobcats defeated the Princeton men's hockey team 5-2 on Wednesday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton came from behind to tie the game at 2-2 in the second period but Ben Nelson scored with a minute left in the second to lift the Bobcats to the win.
Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 10-7 in the opening period but found itself down 2-0 after a period when the Bobcats scored twice in a 3:28 span. Bryan Leitch scored the first goal on the power play when his centering pass deflected into the Tiger goal. Ben Nelson made the score 2-0 when he skated out from behind the net and wrapped the puck around the outstretched pad of Princeton sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba.
Princeton came out firing to begin the second period and got on the board at 3:38 when freshman Mike Kramer recorded his first collegiate goal. The goal came seconds after sophomore Brad Schroeder slid a shot along the goal line. Kramer picked up that rebound and fed freshman Matt Godlewski at the point. Godlewski shot, but the puck was blocked right to Kramer, who scored from a short angle to cut the Quinnipiac lead in half.
Princeton drew even five minutes later when junior Lee Jubinville scored his third goal of the season. Sophomore Cam MacIntyre got the puck to senior Mike Moore at the point, who took a shot that was stopped by Quinnipiac goaltender Bud Fisher. The puck bounced up and over Fisher and laid in the crease, where Jubinville pounced on it and slid it over the goal line.
Play evened out following the goal, but Quinnipiac scored with 1:04 left in the period to take a 3-2 lead to the locker room. Ben Nelson scored the goal, his second of the night, off a screen from the top of the circle. Quinnipiac added two goals in the third period to seal the 5-2 win. David Marshall scored on the power play and Jamie Bates added the final tally.
Kalemba made 25 saves in the loss, while Fisher stopped 23 shots for the win. Princeton falls to 3-4 overall while Quinnipiac moves to 5-3-2 overall. The teams play again on Saturday at Quinnipiac at 3:30 p.m.
