STATE COLLEGE, Pa.
? Princeton sent 27 fencers to Penn State last weekend to open
their season with individual competition at the Garret Open. Four Tigers
finished in the top 10 of their weapons, each of which featured at least 60
competitors on the men's side and 46 for the women.
Fencers from Penn State, Yale, Northwestern, Temple, Notre
Dame, Penn, Ohio State, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Cleveland State, Drew, North
Carolina, Cornell, Rutgers, Wayne State and Stevens Tech joined the Tigers in participating
in the event.
In the men's epee, Princeton placed three of its five
entrants in the top 20 of 68 with freshman Nathaniel Sulat taking eighth, sophomore
Edward Hurme 12th and senior Tommi Hurme 17th. Freshman
Mike Elfassy took 26th and Max Peck placed 48th.
Sophomore Clayton Flanders was the highest finisher of four
Tiger entrants in the men's foil. He took eighth of 63 while senior Doug
Hohensee was 30th, freshman Peter Toshev was 39th and freshman
Brendan Heath was 56th.
Rookie John Stogin led seven Princeton
fencers in the sabre, finishing ninth of 60, just ahead of sophomore Thomas
Abend. Sophomores Greg Hohensee and Paul Boswell placed 28th and 29th
of 33, respectively. Senior Robert Brenner placed 40th while junior
Siddharth Bhaskar was 46th and sophomore Steven Liss was 48th.
In the women's epee, junior Jasjit Bhinder took 12th
to lead four Tigers while sophomores Chandler Clay and Lauren Clark were 17th
and 38th respectively and junior Jo-Ann Karhson was 41st of
54.
Three Tigers competed in the women's foil as sophomore Karen
Petsche was 28th, freshman Mina Zargham was 29th and sophomore
Ann Gong was 37th of 47.
Freshman Caroline Merz took eighth in the sabre while fellow
rookie Lyuba Docheva was 21st, junior Jessica Fields was 33rd
and senior Cara DiGirolamo was 35th of 46.
