Home Opener
After beginning the season with three games on the road, Princeton opens its home schedule this weekend against St. Lawrence and Clarkson, the top two finishers in ECAC Hockey last season.
Following Saturday's game with Clarkson, there will be a dedication ceremony for the Baker Rink lobbies held at the East end of Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton put together back-to-back solid performances on the road to sweep Cornell and Colgate last weekend. Princeton topped Cornell 3-2 and shut out Colgate 2-0.
A Good Way to Start
Princeton's season-opening three-game win streak marks the team's best start since winning three games to begin the 1979-80 season. Princeton was unbeaten in four (1-0-3) to start the 2000-01 season.
Still Unbeaten
At 3-0 overall this season, Princeton remains one of only two unbeaten teams in the nation. The other is top-ranked Miami.
National Recognition
Princeton's 3-0 record has garnered some national attention early this season as Princeton entered the USCHO.com poll at No. 18 this week, its first national ranking since the 1998-99 season. Princeton received votes in the USA Today Poll was ranked 17th on the InsideCollegeHockey.com Power Rankings. Princeton was selected as the Team of the Week by CollegeHockeyNews.com after last weekend's sweep.
Speaking of the Sweep
Princeton's sweep of Cornell and Colgate marked its first sweep of the two teams on the road since the 1994-95 season. That was also the last time Princeton won at Cornell. The Tigers sweep was their first league weekend sweep on the road since February of 2000 when the Tigers swept Rensselaer and Union.
Perfect on the Penalty Kill
Princeton has killed off each of the 16 power plays its has given opponents this season. The Tigers penalty kill currently ranks first in the nation as Princeton is the only team yet to give up a power-play goal.
National Scoring
Cam MacIntyre, Lee Jubinville and Brett Wilson currently rank first, third and fifth nationally in points per game. MacIntyre has eight points in three games, Jubinville has seven and Wilson has six.
League Honors
Zane Kalemba was named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week following a 53-save weekend against Cornell and Colgate, which included his first collegiate shutout. Lee Jubinville was named to the league's honor roll as well, as he contributed two goals and two assists to Princeton's wins.
After starting last season 1-6-2, the Tigers finished out the season 14-10-1. With a 3-0 record this season, the Tigers are 17-10-1 since last Thanksgiving.
Staying in Front
Princeton scored the first goal in all three games this season and has not yet trailed in any of the three games and has held the lead for 81% of the minutes played.
The Series with St. Lawrence
Princeton trails the all-time series with St. Lawrence 54-17-5. St. Lawrence leads 25-11-4 in games played at Princeton. The teams split last season.
Scouting the Saints
St. Lawrence is 3-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in ECAC Hockey after being swept last weekend at home by Dartmouth and Harvard. The Saints have lost five of six games and have wins this season over Clarkson and Union in non-league games and Providence.
Princeton and St. Lawrence each won on their home ice last season. The Saints won 5-4 in Canton in November as sophomores Dan Bartlett and Mark Magnowski both recorded two points. Princeton then topped St. Lawrence 4-1 in the regular-season finale at Baker Rink. Magnowski and junior Brett Wilson each had two points in the win.
The Series with Clarkson
Clarkson leads the all-time series with Princeton 67-23-5 and leads 31-17-4 in games played in Princeton. Last season the Tigers swept Clarkson for the first time since the 1989-90 season.
Scouting the Golden Knights
Clarkson is 6-2 overall on the season and is 3-0 in league play. Clarkson is currently ranked 8th in the nation and enters the weekend off a sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth. Clarkson has won six of seven games.
Last Season vs. Clarkson
Princeton took both meetings from Clarkson last season, winning 3-2 in Potsdam and 7-1 in Princeton. Sophomore Tyler Beachell scored the game winner in the win on the road, while senior Mike Moore had a goals and two assists in the win at home. Sophomore Zane Kalemba backstopped Princeton to both wins.
Youth Movement
Princeton's freshman and sophomore classes represent 64% of the team. Princeton's two largest classes are the sophomore class of nine and the freshman class of seven. Princeton smallest class is the juniors, of which there are four.
Home and Away
Princeton finished 2006-07 with a 9-8 record on its home ice, a 6-8-2 record on the road and was 0-0-1 at neutral sites. Princeton is currently 3-0-0 on the road this season.
Good Against the Top Teams
Princeton fared well against the top teams in the league last season, splitting with first-place St. Lawrence, sweeping second-place Clarkson, taking three points from third-place Dartmouth, and splitting with fourth-place Quinnipiac.
Scoring More...
Princeton finished the 2006-07 season having scored 102 goals, its highest total since scoring 104 in the 1998-99 season and its fourth highest total. Princeton has scored 11 goals in three games this season.
And Allowing Less
Princeton allowed 100 goals in 34 games last season, an average of 2.90 per game, which was the lowest in the past 10 seasons.
Guy Gadowsky enters his fourth season behind the Tiger bench. He is joined by third-year assistant coach Keith Fisher, Matt Lindsay and Neil Little. Lindsay is a Williams grad that most recently worked at Robert Morris, while Little will work with the goaltenders and played several seasons with the Philadelphia Phantoms.
The Captains
Senior Mike Moore will wear the captain's C on his jersey this season and will be joined by senior Kyle Hagel and junior Brandan Kushniruk as assistant captains.
Notably Absent
Princeton's nine-member senior class from a year ago has graduated and seven of the nine members have begun pro careers. Kevin Westgarth and Darroll Powe are playing in the AHL, Daryl Marcoux and Grant Goeckner-Zoeller in the ECHL, Brett Westgarth in the IHL, and Max Cousins and B.J. Sklapsky are playing in Europe.
On the Horizon
Princeton will play its next three games all against Quinnipiac. The teams play a non-league game this Saturday at 7 in Hamden, then meet Wednesday and the following Saturday in games that will count towards the league standings.
Hot Start
Cam MacIntyre has recorded eight points in three games to lead the team in scoring. After registering one point in the first 13 games of his collegiate career, he now has 20 points in the 24 games since, including points in all three games this season.
Right Behind Him
Lee Jubinville and Brett Wilson entered the season as Princeton's top two career scorers and have added seven and six point respectively to their totals. The pair has points in all three games this season.
Points From the Blueline
Sophomore Jody Pederson and freshman Taylor Fedun each have a pair of points on the season. Pederson scored the game winner at Yale and along with Fedun, assisted on the game winner at Colgate. Fedun has two assists.
More Scoring
Sophomore Mark Magnowski, Princeton's third leading goal scorer last season, got on the scoreboard on Saturday at Colgate with his first goal of the season, the game winner.
In the Pipes
Sophomore Zane Kalemba continued his strong start to the season, making 53 saves over the weekend to lift his season record to 3-0-0 with a 1.34 goals-against average and a .951 save percentage. Kalemba also has one shutout to his credit.
