Aemisegger Tops Another Record As Women's Swim/Dive Maintains Strong Second-Place Standing At Big Al Open
December 02, 2007 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Sophomore Alicia Aemisegger completed a terrific weekend with her third individual victory, a dominant performance in the 1650 free, to lead the Princeton women's swimming and diving team to an impressive second-place finish at the 2007 Big Al Open. No. 11 Penn State won the weekend, but Princeton knocked off a pair of Big East schools, as well as Washington State and Ivy rivals Columbia and Brown.
The dual meet between Princeton and Brown will come from this weekend's results, which will move the Tigers to 3-0 in the league and 4-0 overall as they head into the 2008 portion of the season.
Aemisegger picked up her seventh individual Princeton record, as well as her second pool record of the weekend, when she won the 1650 free in 16:12.56, more than 10 seconds faster than the NCAA A-cut time and more than 19 seconds faster than anybody else in the race. Senior teammate Ellen Gray placed third overall in 16:38.12, while freshman Nicole McAndrew finished ninth in 17:06.10. Aemisegger went on to race in the 200 breast, where she placed fifth in 2:17.29.
Peggy Kearns qualified for NCAA Zone Regionals and won the platform competition with 231.15 points.
Freshman Meredith Monroe placed fourth in the 200 back in 2:01.34, while junior Justina DiFazio placed fifth in a time of 51.17. Junior Monika Friedman placed fifth in the 200 fly (2:02.84), and the 400 free relay team of Monroe, Ming Ong, Megan Waters and Aemisegger placed fourth in 3:28.79.
It was the only time that Aemisegger didn't post an A-cut NCAA time during the weekend, which will be long remembered for the performances of a pair of Tiger sophomores. Aemisegger won three events, including the 400 IM showdown with Kaitlin O'Brien, a fellow 2007 All-America, while Courtney Kilkuts reached her first NCAA championships with a brilliant Friday performance in the 200 IM.
