Princeton Rallies For 5-3 Win at Nebraska-Omaha
December 30, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Princeton men's hockey team scored four goals in the third period to rally for a 5-3 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday evening at the Qwest Center. Sophomore Mark Magnowski scored the game winner and added two assists in the win.
Neither team scored in the first period, but Princeton did have two good chances. First, sophomore Kevin Kaiser nearly scored when he redirected sophomore Brad Schroeder's point shot by Nebraska-Omaha goaltender Jeremie Dupont, but it was ruled the puck went in off his skate and the goal was disallowed. Princeton also came close in the closing seconds when freshman Kevin Lohry's backhanded breakaway shot beat DuPont, but hit the cross bar and sat in the crease for a moment before UNO was able to clear the puck.
The Mavericks then opened the scoring 40 seconds into the second period when Mick Lawrence scored on the power play. Dan Charleston controlled play up high and fed Bryan Marshall along the goal line, where he fed Lawrence with a pass between the circles and his shot beat Princeton junior netminder Thomas Sychterz high on the stick side.
The lead last just 1:05 before Princeton evened it up on sophomore Dan Bartlett's second goal of the season. Bartlett carried the puck at the blue line and made a great play to step around a Maverick defender, then beat Dupont to knot the score at a goal apiece. Princeton then had two great opportunities as they held a pair of 40 second two-man advantages but couldn't find the back of the net.
The Mavericks regained the lead with 3:36 left in the period when Dan Swanson scored through traffic. JJ Koehler and Juha Uotila assisted on the Swanson's goal, which gave UNO a 2-1 lead to take to the intermission.
Princeton saved its best period for the third and came from behind with four goals in the period to pull off the 5-3 victory. Princeton evened the score at 4:49 with their first of two power play goals. Senior Erik Pridham worked the puck to freshman Taylor Fedun, who took a point shot that senior Landis Stankievech redirected for his second goal of the season. Princeton then made it 3-2 four minutes later when Fedun scored a power-play goal off a faceoff win by sophomore Mark Magnowski. Fedun's shot beat a screened Dupont high on the stick side.
UNO quickly evened the score on Brandon Scero's goal, but the Tigers went ahead for good when Magnowski scored shorthanded at 15:15. After a defensive zone faceoff win, senior Mike Moore gained the puck and drove to the UNO goal and as he skated through the crease, the puck was left for Magnowski, who pounced on it for his third goal of the season. All three have been game winners. Princeton sealed the win when Moore scored into an open net in the final minute.
Freshman goaltender Alan Reynolds got the win as he made 11 saves in the final half of the game. Sychterz made 11 saves in his half. Dupont made 10 in the loss.
Princeton is now 6-8 overall and returns to action next Friday at 4 p.m. against Dartmouth in a game will air live on ESPNU.
