This Week's Storylines
Race to the Finish
Princeton continues the race to the postseason with important ECAC Hockey League games this weekend at Colgate and Cornell. Princeton enters the weekend a single point behind sixth-place Colgate and Harvard and two points ahead of ninth-place Rensselaer.
Log Jam
The ECAC Hockey League standings are tight entering the final two weekends of the regular season. All 12 teams can still earn a first-round bye, and 10 of the 12 teams could still get a bye, host the first round, or travel in the first round. See Page 3 for a more complete look at the play-off race.
Last Time Out
Princeton split a pair of games over the weekend to climb to 10-12-3 overall and 7-9-2 in the league. Despite holding a 2-1 lead after a period on Friday against Harvard, the Tigers lost to the Crimson 4-2 on Friday night. Freshman Mark Magnowski and sophomore Brandan Kushniruk scored in the loss. A day later, Princeton scored a goal in each period and senior B.J. Sklapsky made 33 saves to shut out Dartmouth 3-0. The Princeton goals came from Magnowski, senior Kevin Westgarth and freshman Kevin Kaiser. Senior Darroll Powe had two assists.
10th Win
Princeton picked up its 10th win of the season on Saturday against Dartmouth, and in doing so, evened its win total from last season. Princeton's win total has increased in each of the past three seasons.
Scoring Margin
Last weekend was Princeton's first of the season where they did not have at least one one-goal game or tie. Princeton lost by two on Friday and won by three on Saturday.
Too Close for Comfort
If it seems like most Princeton games come down to a single goal, it is because they do. Fifteen of Princeton's 25 games this season have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie. Of the other 10 games, seven were decided by two goal margins. Princeton's win over Dartmouth was its second win with a three or more goal margin of victory. Three of the two-goal games featured empty-net goals.
First Shut Out
Saturday night's shutout of Dartmouth was Princeton's first of the season and its first in a 36-game span. Princeton's last shutout was on Jan. 14, 2006 when Eric Leroux blanked Cornell at home. Princeton's last four shutouts have come on home ice.
Dartmouth's Number
Princeton has had Dartmouth's number over the past three seasons, posting a 4-1-1 record in its last six games with the Big Green. Princeton was winless against Dartmouth in the previous three seasons. The Tigers have shutout Dartmouth 3-0 in the last two meetings at Baker Rink.
The Opponents
The Series With Colgate
Colgate is 44-35-6 all-time against Princeton and leads the series 24-10-2 at home. Princeton defeated Colgate 5-3 at home last season to snap a eight-game winless streak against the Raiders, but Colgate did win the teams' meeting earlier this season at Princeton. The Tigers last won at Starr Rink in the 2000-01 season.
Scouting the Raiders
Colgate is 13-15-4 overall and 7-8-3 in the ECACHL, sitting just a single point ahead of Princeton in the standings. The Raiders have split their last two weekends, defeating St. Lawrence and Union, but falling to Clarkson and Rensselaer.
The Last Meeting
Colgate netminder Mark Dekanich made 49 saves to lift Colgate to a 4-2 win over Princeton on Nov. 18 at Baker Rink. Princeton took a season high 51 shots in the game, but was held to just two goals. Seniors Darroll Powe and Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored for Princeton, while Tyler Burton had three assists for Colgate.
The Series With Cornell
Cornell leads its all-time series against Princeton 73-42-7, and holds a 41-12-2 edge in Ithaca. Princeton's 3-0 win in their second meeting last season snapped a 10-game series losing streak for Princeton. Princeton last won in Ithaca in the 1994-95 season.
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell is 12-9-4 overall and 8-6-4 in the ECACHL to sit fourth in the standings. Cornell is 3-1-1 in its last five games and took three points from Union and Rensselaer last weekend, tying the Dutchmen and beating the Engineers. The only loss in that span for Cornell came to first-pace St. Lawrence.
The Last Meeting
Cornell jumped to a 3-0 lead through two periods, then held off a late Princeton charge for a 3-2 win on Nov. 17 at Baker Rink. Freshman Dan Bartlett and sophomore Lee Jubinville scored for Princeton, which outshot Cornell 26-23. Tony Romano scored the game winner for Cornell.
Team Notes
Home and Away
Princeton is 6-7-0 on its home ice this season, is 4-5-2 on the road and is 0-0-1 at neutral sites. Princeton has two home games and two away games remaining on its regular-season schedule this season.
Ranked Teams
Princeton's win against Quinnipiac on Jan. 9 was its second win of the season over a ranked team. The Tigers are 2-2-1 in their five games against ranked teams, defeating Clarkson and Quinnipiac, losing to Cornell and Quinnipiac and tying Dartmouth. Clarkson, ranked 11th at the time, is the highest ranked team Princeton has played. No. 18 Cornell, No. 15 St. Lawrence and No. 9 Clarkson remain on the Tigers schedule this season.
Special Teams
Thirty-three of Princeton's 72 goals this season have come on special teams. Princeton has 30 power-play goals and three shorthanded goals this season. Both goals in the Harvard loss came on the power-play, along with Princeton's second goal against Dartmouth.
Lots of Shots
Despite being outshot in both games last weekend, Princeton has outshot 17 of 23 opponents this season. Last season Princeton outshot its opponents in 13 of 31 games. Princeton had 47 shots in the Brown tie, its sixth game of the season with 40+ shots. Oddly enough Princeton is just
2-2-2 in those games.
Staying Out of the Box
Princeton is the seventh-least penalized team in the nation, averaging 13.5 penalty minutes per game and is also the least penalized team in the ECAC Hockey League. Princeton is averaging two penalties less per game this season than last season. Here is a list of the seven least penalized teams in the nation.
53. Princeton 13.5
54. Lake Superior 13.1
Army 13.1
56. Notre Dame 12.8
57. Massachusetts 11.2
58. St. Cloud State 11.1
59. UMass-Lowell 10.3
Scoring More…
Princeton has scored 81 goals in each of the past two seasons. Last season the Tigers did it despite the graduation of two of its top-three scorers from the previous season. That number is 19 more than the total of 62 that Princeton scored in 31 games two seasons ago. Princeton is on pace to score 89 goals in 31 games this year.
And Allowing Less
Princeton is on pace to also allow 89 goals this season, which is less than the 96 it allowed last season. Princeton has decreased the amount of goals it has given up in the past four seasons, from a high of 140 in 2002-03.
Individual Notes
Topping the Charts
After being sidelined with an injury on Friday against Harvard, sophomore Lee Jubinville returned to the Tigers lineup on Saturday night and assisted on the game-winning goal. The assist was 14th assist and 22nd point, both of which lead the team. Seventeen of his points have come in league games which ranks him 10th in the ECACHL in conference scoring.
Captain's Contribution
Senior Darroll Powe posted assists in both games over the weekend and is just a point behind Jubinville in the Princeton scoring race. Powe leads the team in goals scored with 10 and has six goals on the power play.
Leading Freshman
Freshman Mark Magnowski continued his hot hand of late, scoring Princeton's first goal in both games over the weekend. His goal against Dartmouth was the game winner. Magnowski ranks 10th among conference freshmen in scoring with 16 points.
Shutout No. 2
Senior B.J. Sklapsky made 33 saves to record his second career shutout on Saturday night. Both of his shutouts have been by the same score and come against the same opponent, 3-0 vs. Dartmouth. Sklapsky is 2-0-1 with a 0.65 goals against and a .982 save percentage in his career against Dartmouth.
Closing in on 100
Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller picked up an assist on Friday against Harvard for the 98th point of his career. He now sits just two points away from reaching the 100-point mark. The last Princeton players to reach 100 points were Jeff Halpern and Scott Bertoli who both reached the mark in the 1998-99 season.
Shot From The Point
Freshman Jody Pederson notched assists in both games over the weekend on blasts from the point. On Friday, sophomore Brandan Kushniruk deflected his shot for a goal, and on Saturday, it was senior Kevin Westgarth who batted Pederson's rebound into the goal. Both came on the power play.
