February 16, 2007 | Women's Squash
The No. 1 Princeton women's squash team defeated Brown 9-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Howe Cup Championships Friday morning in New Haven, Conn. The Tigers won 27 of 28 games, and 16 of their 28 wins came by 9-0 scores. Senior Gen Lessard and freshman Kaitlin Sennatt each won 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 for Princeton, which will take on the three-time defending national champion Yale Bulldogs Saturday at 2 p.m.
Playing in a three-shift format, Princeton exerted its dominance at the start. Sennatt swept her match at No. 9, while both No. 3 Amanda Siebert and No. 6 Casey Riley each won while dropping only two points. The Tigers clinched the team win in the second shift, as No. 5 Ali Pearson won 9-0, 9-0, 9-4, while No. 8 Carly Grabowski won 9-2, 9-0, 9-1. Brown got its only game of the match when Megan Cerullo took a 9-6 decision at No. 2, but Tiger freshman Neha Kumar swept the final two games to clinch the match.
Lessard gave Princeton a seventh win, and No. 7 Marilla Hiltz followed quickly. Top player Claire Rein-Weston pulled out a hard-fought 10-8 win in the second game and ended the team match with a 9-0 win in the finale.
Princeton defeated Yale 6-3 earlier this season in a match played in New Haven. Yale, which has won every title since 2004, claimed wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 8 against the Tigers. The Bulldogs topped Trinity 5-4 in their quarterfinal showdown.
"I think we're ready for whoever we play this weekend," head coach Gail Ramsay said after Princeton improved to 9-0 on the season. "Everybody is focused and everybody is excited about the challenge ahead."
