Women's Lacrosse Ranked Fourth by Lacrosse Magazine, Fifth by IL in Preseason Polls
February 05, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
The Princeton women's lacrosse team is a top five team according to two preseason polls, released by Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse, as the Tigers begin practice for their season opener March 3 against Johns Hopkins.
The Tigers are ranked No. 4 behind Northwestern, Virginia and Duke in Lacrosse Magazine's annual preseason rankings. Princeton is ranked No. 5 behind Northwestern, Duke, North Carolina and Georgetown in the IL media poll.
Princeton, in its 21st season under head coach Chris Sailer, returns nine starters from its last game of 2006, an overtime NCAA quarterfinal loss, including four all-region players. Kathleen Miller, Princeton's leading scorer from a year ago, and Katie Lewis-Lamonica, who led the team with 38 goals, were first-team all-region picks in 2006, while junior defender Norris Novak and sophomore midfielder Holly McGarvie, the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, were second-team all-region picks.
Senior goalie Colleen O'Boyle and senior defender Caitlin Reimers are team captains for the Tigers along with Miller. O'Boyle started the final eight games for Princeton last season and 10 overall, while Reimers enters her senior season having started all 56 games of her Princeton career.
The Tigers were NCAA tournament participants for the ninth consecutive season in 2006 and earned a share of the Ivy League title along with Cornell. Princeton, whose nine straight NCAA quarterfinal appearances is the longest such streak in Division I, are one of just two teams (along with Georgetown) to have reached the NCAA quarterfinals in each of the six seasons the tournament has featured 16 teams.
After opening the season with Johns Hopkins, a fellow top 10 team, Princeton also plays Virginia and Duke, both on the road, in the season's first three weeks.
The Tigers' March 21 home game against Loyola at Princeton Stadium will be televised live by ESPNU.
