Princeton Men Wrap Up Competition at NCAA Fencing Championships
March 23, 2007 | Men's Fencing
MADISON, N.J. -- The round-robin competition wrapped up Friday at the NCAA fencing championships for the three Princeton men's fencers who qualified for the national meet. Junior epeeist Tommi Hurme took 13th while freshman sabre Thomas Abend finished 19th and senior foil Alejandro Bras placed 22nd.
All three Princeton fencers took on the other 23 national qualifiers in their weapon in five-touch bouts and the four top win-loss records moved on to a tournament of 15-touch bouts that determined the national champion.
Hurme placed 13th, going 11-12 in the preliminary bouts. Abend went 7-16 while Bras was 6-18.
It was the third NCAA finals appearance for Bras, who placed 21st as a freshman and 18th as a sophomore. Hurme took 15th a year ago in his only other national finals bid.
The final team standings at the NCAA finals are based on a combined men's-women's total, and after Princeton's four female entrants wrapped up competition Sunday, Princeton finished 10th.
