Women's Lacrosse Opens Ivy League Play at Cornell
March 29, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
The nine-time Ivy League champion Princeton women's lacrosse team begins defense of its 2006 crown Saturday when the Tigers travel to Cornell's Schoellkopf Field for a noon matchup with the Big Red, the team that Princeton shared the title with a year ago.
The 2007 Tigers (3-3), whose three losses have come by a combined total of five goals against three top 10 teams, will look to continue a stretch of incredible Ivy success that dates back to the 1993 season. Princeton has not lost more than one Ivy League game in any of the last 14 seasons and has a combined league record of 83-10 in that time.
Princeton's success against Cornell is even more impressive. The Tigers have won 19 straight games against the Big Red dating back to the 1989 season and have 26 wins in 28 all-time meetings in the series.
Cornell is 2-5 overall and 1-1 in Ivy League play heading into Saturday's game, with the league loss coming against now 14th-ranked Penn last Saturday. The Big Red has the Ivy League's leading scorer in junior Courtney Farrell, who has 32 points (13 goals and 19 assists) in Cornell's first seven games.
Princeton, now ranked ninth in the IWLCA poll, was in a tight game throughout with No. 4 Virginia last Saturday but left Charlottesville on the wrong end of a 9-7 decision. Katie Lewis-Lamonica, who now has at least one point in each of her last 18 games, had two goals for Princeton, which outshot the Cavaliers 25-21 and had 20 ground balls to just nine for Virginia.
The Tigers' two other losses this season have come by two goals at No. 5 Duke and by one goal to No. 10 Penn State at Class of 1952 Stadium two weeks ago.
Lewis-Lamonica has a team-high 19 goals for Princeton and has scored at least two goals in every game this season. Kathleen Miller has 12 goals and six assists and is just one point away from moving into the top 10 all-time on Princeton's career scoring list.
Since the beginning of the 1994 season, the Tigers have lost only one Ivy League game to a team other than Dartmouth, a 7-6 loss at Yale on April 9, 2003. Princeton's record against the six Ivy schools other than Dartmouth in that 13-season span is 73-1.
The Tigers trailed Cornell 4-1 midway through the first half at Class of 1952 Stadium last season before six straight goals to take control and pulling away for a 10-6 victory over the Big Red. Miller scored three times in the victory, while Lewis-Lamonica and Holly McGarvie each had two goals for Princeton.
Princeton won in sudden victory overtime the last time it visited Schoellkopf Field when Lindsey Biles '05 scored with 14 seconds left in the first sudden victory period to give the Tigers a 9-8 win.
The 2007 Tigers will play at Yale next Saturday before returning home for games against Temple and Harvard the following week.
