Women's Lacrosse Routs Cornell, 18-9, in Ivy League Opener
March 31, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
The defending Ivy League champion Princeton women's lacrosse team left no doubt about its early Ivy League intentions in 2007, scoring the game's first eight goals on the way to an 18-9 win over Cornell Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field.
The Tigers (4-3, 1-0 Ivy), who defeated Cornell for the 19th straight year in the regular season and the 20th straight time overall, held the Big Red (2-6, 1-2 Ivy) off the scoreboard for the first 28 minutes of the game. By that time, Princeton held an 8-0 lead behind four goals from junior Ashley Amo, including three straight in a five-minute span midway through the half.
Katie Lewis-Lamonica's second goal gave Princeton the 8-0 lead with six minutes left in the first half. Cornell, which trailed 8-2 at halftime, never got closer than a five-goal deficit in the second half.
Lewis-Lamonica and Amo each finished the game with four goals, while Kathleen Miller and Christine Casaceli each scored three times. Miller, who also had two assists, moved into ninth place all-time at Princeton with 166 career points.
The Tigers won 19 of the game's 29 draws, including five draw controls from Holly McGarvie. Princeton outshot the Big Red 33-26, including 15-9 in the decisive first half.
Katherine Simmons, Charlotte Schmidlapp and Margaux Viola each scored twice for Cornell, which last defeated Princeton in 1988. The Tigers improved to 27-2 all-time against the Big Red in a series that dates to 1980.
Princeton also improved to 74-1 since the beginning of the 1994 season against the six Ivy League schools other than Dartmouth.
After a scoreless first six minutes Saturday, Amo and Lewis-Lamonica scored in a two-minute span to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead with 21 minutes left in the first half. After another seven-minute span without a goal, Katie Cox began Princeton's decisive run with 14 minutes left in the half, followed by Amo's three-goal run.
Casaceli's first goal with 8:21 left in the half put Princeton ahead 7-0.
After Cornell's Simmons scored to make it 9-4 Princeton with 24 minutes left in the game, Miller and Alison Murray, off the draw immediately following Miller's goal, scored in a nine-second span to push their team's lead back to 11-4.
Casaceli would then score twice in a 1:12 span, followed by another Miller goal a minute later, to put the Tigers ahead 14-5 with 17:40 left.
Kaitlyn Perrelle had seven saves for the Tigers, which also got two goals from Cox.
Princeton will play at Yale next Saturday.
