Women's Tennis Drops Ivy Opener 5-2 At No. 57 Penn
March 31, 2007 | Women's Tennis
Ivana King and Blakely Ashley both picked up singles victories for the No. 72 Princeton women's tennis team, but their efforts weren't enough to push the Tigers to an Ivy-opening win at Penn. The Quakers, currently the top-ranked Ivy League team in the national poll, swept through the doubles portion of the match and picked up four singles wins to claim the victory.
Penn jumped out quickly by sweeping the doubles. Darcy Robertson and Melissa Saiontz nearly managed a win at No. 2, but they fell 8-7 to Yulia Rivelis and Charlotte Tansil. The No. 1 team of Sarah Huah and Ivana King fell 8-2 to give Penn a 1-0 lead in doubles, and Kristen Scott and Laura Trimble fell 8-3 in the clinching match.
None of the six singles matches went three sets, although Saiontz nearly forced Ekaterina Kosminskaya to a third set. After falling 6-3 in the opener, she dropped a second-set tiebreak 8-6. Princeton's two wins came from King, who defeated Julia Koulbitskaya 7-5, 6-1 at second singles, and Ashley, who defeated Michelle Mitchell 7-6, 6-1 at fifth singles. Robertson, Huah and Joanna Roth each fell in straight-set matches at Nos. 3, 4 and 6.
Princeton is now 8-6, 0-1 in the Ivy League, and will host Brown and Yale next Friday and Saturday. The weekend will begin Friday at 2 p.m. against the Brown Bears.
