Tigers Visit Unbeaten Rutgers Wednesday Night in Women's Lacrosse
March 07, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
Princeton and Rutgers meet for the first time since 2001 in women's lacrosse Wednesday night in Piscataway, and neither team has seen defeat in 2007 entering the game.
The Tigers won a thrilling season opener in sudden victory overtime against Johns Hopkins Saturday, with Holly McGarvie serving as the hero by scoring with 37 seconds left on the clock. The Scarlet Knights, who moved to 3-0 with a win over Delaware this past weekend, are off to their best start since the 1990 season.
Princeton is No. 9 in the first IWLCA poll of the regular season, while Rutgers, who defeated Princeton's Ivy rival Cornell in its season opener, is receiving votes in the poll.
Both Katie Lewis-Lamonica and McGarvie scored three times for Princeton in its thrilling win over Hopkins, while senior Kathleen Miller had two goals and two assists. Freshman goalie Kaitlyn Perrelle came off the bench midway through the second half and had three big saves in her collegiate debut, including a stop on a free-position shot 20 seconds into the sudden victory overtime that gave the Tigers the ball.
Michelle Poole and Nina Frankoski pace Rutgers in the early season with 11 points apiece through three games. In addition to the wins over Cornell and Delaware, the Scarlet Knights also defeated Villanova 19-6 on Feb. 28.
Wednesday's game will be played on the artificial surface at RU Turf Field, adjacent to Rutgers Stadium, and not at the Yurcak Soccer/Lacrosse Field.
Princeton plays at No. 4 Duke Sunday afternoon in North Carolina.
