This Week's Storylines
On to the Next Round
The Princeton men's hockey team begins its quarterfinal playoff series this weekend at Dartmouth. Princeton advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 series win over Brown last weekend and went 1-0-1 against Dartmouth during the regular season.
First-Round Recap
Princeton took two of three games from Brown in a tightly played series last weekend at Hobey Baker Rink. Brown took the opener on Friday night in overtime, before Princeton evened the series with an overtime win of its own on Saturday night. On Sunday, overtime was not needed, but the game was tight as Princeton came from behind in the third period for a 4-3 win.
15 Wins
Princeton picked up its 14th and 15th wins of the season last weekend, giving the Tigers their highest win total since the 1998-99 season when Princeton won 20 games. Princeton's 15-win total is ties for the fifth-highest win total in program history. Princeton won 20 games in 1998-99 and 18 games in 1994-95, 1996-97 and 1997-98. Princeton also won 15 games in 1928-29 and 1932-33.
.500 Mark
Princeton's win on Sunday lifted the Tigers' winning percentage above .500 for the first time this season. Princeton flirted with the .500 mark in early January, but fell below later in the month. With Princeton's sweep of Clarkson and St. Lawrence the Tigers returned to .500 overall and in the league. The Tigers dropped a game below with the loss to Brown on Friday, but climbed back to .500, then over it on Saturday and Sunday. Princeton was last at or above .500 overall in 1998-99 and last did that in the league in 2001-02. Princeton's .500 mark in league play marked just the eighth time in Tiger history that it finished the league season with a record at or above .500. The others came in 1967-68, 1987-88, 1989-90, 1996-97, 1998-99, 2000-01 and 2001-02.
Playoff Wins
Princeton's win over Brown on Saturday snapped a 17-game playoff losing streak that dated back to the 1999 season. Princeton's last playoff win came before that came over Colgate on March 18, 1999 in the ECAC play-in game in Lake Placid. Princeton also won its first playoff series since 1999. That season Princeton defeated Cornell in a first-round series with a tie and a win. Princeton had lost seven postseason series' since that win over Colgate.
Playoff Hosting
Princeton hosted a playoff series for just the second time in Tiger history when Brown visited Baker Rink last weekend. Princeton has won both series and has a 4-2-1 playoff record on home ice. Princeton also hosted play-in games in 1991 and 1995. In 1991, the Tigers fell to Yale, and in 1995, Princeton defeated Union on its run to the ECAC Championship game.
Playoffs vs. Brown
Princeton has met Brown in four playoff series, winning three of them. All three of the series wins for Princeton came with two games to one margins. The Brown win was a two-game sweep.
Recent Trips to Overtime
Princeton's loss to Brown snapped a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) in overtime by the Tigers. That stretch started with a tie at Dartmouth and continued with wins at home over Union, Nebraska-Omaha and Brown. After losing to Brown on Friday in overtime, Princeton picked up its fourth overtime win of the year on Saturday in the extra session.
More Overtime Thoughts
Princeton's two trips to overtime against Brown marked its ninth and 10th overtime games this season. Princeton is 4-3-3 in overtime this year, and was 0-4-3 in overtime last year. Six of Princeton's 17 overtime games that have occurred in the last two seasons have come against Brown, including a streak of six-straight overtime games that was snapped on Sunday night.
6th-Place Finish
Princeton finished the regular season tied for sixth in the ECACHL standings. That finish ties three other seasons as the Tigers third-best league regular-season finish. Princeton finished the regular season fourth in 1998-99 and was fifth in 1996-97. The Tigers won the ECAC Postseason tournament in 1997-98, but finished seventh in the regular season that year.
Team Awards
The Princeton men's hockey team held its banquet last Saturday night following its win over St. Lawrence. The team handed out its four year-end awards. Senior captain Darroll Powe was awarded the Blackwell Trophy (team mvp) and Vaughan Cup (perseverance and dedication). Senior Daryl Marcoux won the 1941 Championship Trophy (winning spirit and inspiration) and freshman Mark Magnowski won the Hobey Baker Trophy (top freshman).
Record Against the Top Three
Princeton is 4-1-1 against the top three finishers in the ECACHL this season. Princeton went 1-1 against first-place St. Lawrence, 2-0 against second-place Clarkson, and 1-0-1 against third-place Dartmouth. That record is what gave Princeton the tiebreaker over Harvard in the final league standings.
This Week's Opponent
The Series With Dartmouth
Princeton trails its all-time series with Dartmouth 79-87-13 and is 30-35-7 in the series on the road. Princeton has fared well against Dartmouth the past three seasons, posting a 4-1-1 record with its only loss coming in overtime. Princeton tied the Big Green in Hanover in November and shutout Dartmouth at home in February.
The Postseason Series With Dartmouth
Despite meeting 179 times over a 100-year span, Princeton and Dartmouth have never played a playoff game against one another.
Scouting the Big Green
Dartmouth entered the postseason as one of the league's hottest teams, losing just one in their final eight games. That loss coming at Princeton. The Big Green clinched their first round bye the final weekend of the season by sweeping Cornell and Colgate at home. Dartmouth swept Brown and Yale the weekend before that.
The Season Series
Princeton went 1-0-1 against Dartmouth in 2006-07, winning the season series for the second time in three seasons. In the team's first meeting the day after Thanksgiving in Hanover, Dartmouth led 2-0 after a period and 3-1 five minutes into the second period, but Tiger goals from Brandan Kushniruk in the second and Max Cousins midway through the third forged a 3-3 tie. The second meeting came Feb. 10 at Baker Rink as Princeton blanked Dartmouth 3-0. Mark Magnowski scored the eventual game winner four minutes into the game. Kevin Westgarth scored on the power play in the second period and Kevin Kaiser sealed the win with an empty-net goal. B.J. Sklapsky made 33 saves to shutout Dartmouth for the second time in his career.
Individually vs. Dartmouth
Grant Goeckner-Zoeller is Princeton's leading point-getter against Dartmouth, scoring four goals and adding four assists in eight games. Darroll Powe and Max Cousins each have three points against the Big Green, and B.J. Sklapsky is 2-0-1 in three games with two shutouts, a 0.65 goals against and a .982 save percentage. Complete Princeton player stats vs. Dartmouth are on Page 10.

Clarkson, ranked sixth last week, is the highest ranked team Princeton has played. Dartmouth was ranked 15th at the time the teams tied in November and was unranked for the February meeting.

Princeton has received points this season from each of its 24 skaters and one of its goaltenders. With an assist in Sunday's win, Keith Shattenkirk registered his first point of the season. Nineteen different players have scored goals and 22 players have tallied assists.
Scoring More…
Brett Wilson's overtime goal against Brown on Saturday was Princeton's 94th of the season. Princeton had scored 81 goals in 31 games the previous two seasons. Princeton now has scored 98 goals in 32 games.
And Allowing Less
Princeton allowed 88 goals in 31 games this season, which is less than the 96 it allowed last season. Princeton has decreased the amount of goals it has given up in the past four seasons, from a high of 140 in 2002-03. The Tigers have now allowed 91 goals in 32 games.
Individual Notes
Balanced Attack
Fourteen of the 19 skaters and 11 of 13 forwards that appeared in at least one game for the Tigers over the weekend tallied a point. One, Brett Wilson, had points in all three games, while six tallied points in at least two of the games.
Getting on a Roll
Brett Wilson has picked the right time of the season to get rolling, as the sophomore brings a six-game point-scoring streak into this weekend's series. Wilson had two goals and two assists in the Brown series, scoring Saturday's overtime game winner and setting the up the goal that drew Princeton even in the third period on Sunday.
Sparking the Comeback
Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller had three points during the weekend, but the last two assured Princeton of moving on to the next round. Skating with a two-man advantage in the third period and down a goal, Goeckner-Zoeller fed senior Kevin Westgarth a perfect one-time pass that wound up being the tying goal of the game. Six minutes later, freshman Mark Magnowski hit Goeckner-Zoeller with a pass on a 2 on 1 and the senior scored with a wrist shot to put Princeton ahead for good in the game.
Century Mark
Grant Goeckner-Zoeller picked up three points over the weekend to lift his career point total to 106, which tied him with Ed Lee for ninth on the all-time Princeton scoring chart.
Doubling His Total
Senior Daryl Marcoux had three points leading into the weekend, and doubled his point total with three points during the weekend. Marcoux scored the goal that forced overtime late in Game 1, before opening the scoring in Game 3. He later picked up the second assist on Grant Goeckner-Zoeller's game winner in Game 3.
Point Leader
Sophomore Lee Jubinville tallied three points over the weekend, setting up both goals in Princeton's 2-1 overtime win, before scoring Princeton's second goal in Sunday's win. Jubinville's goal was his 10th of the season and he became Princeton's second double-digit goal scorer.
Captain's Contribution
Senior Darroll Powe had assists in both of Princeton's wins over the weekend to lift his season point total to 27 points. Powe has 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points.
Timely Blast
Senior Kevin Westgarth had two points over the weekend, but his second came when his team needed it most. Skating with a two-man advantage, his rocket beat Dan Rosen high over the shoulder to even the score at 3-3 in Sunday's game. Westgarth had seven points the week before.
Perfect Pass
Freshman Mark Magnowski set up Princeton's series-clinching goal when he fed a perfect pass to Grant Goeckner-Zoeller on a 2 on 1. Magnowski had two assists over the weekend to lift his freshman year point total to 22. That gives him the most for a Tiger freshman since Benoit Morin had 24 points in the 1997-98 season. Magnowski's 22 points is one ahead of Brett Wilson's 21 as a freshman and Grant Goeckner-Zoeller's 20 as a freshman.
Double Digits
Freshman Dan Bartlett assisted on Princeton's first goal on Sunday night to reach double digits in points for the season. With that the Tigers now have 10 players with 10 or more points this season.
