Men's Lightweights to Compete for Platt Cup at Cornell on Saturday
April 13, 2007 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
This weekend is a busy one for the Princeton crew program, as all four squads will be in action. Both men's teams head to New York – the heavies will go to New York City and the lightweights will travel to Ithaca – while the women's open squad visits Yale, and the varsity women's lightweights will make a trip out to California.
The men's heavyweight squad, coming off two straight wins over Navy and Rutgers, will compete against Columbia and Penn in the historic Childs Cup regatta on Saturday. The Orange and Black have held the Childs Cup, the oldest collegiate crew cup in the nation, since 1994, and will look to extend the streak to 14. In last season's competition, the Tigers cruised past second-place Penn by 21 seconds and Columbia by 23 seconds.
After a week off, the men's lightweights gear up to take on Rutgers and the defending Ivy League and national champion Cornell squad in the Platt Cup regatta on Saturday in Ithaca. The Big Red currently holds the cup by only four seconds, while the Tigers defeated Rutgers in last year's race. Princeton outrowed Georgetown and Columbia in a three-team regatta two weeks ago and could push their record to 4-0 with a win this weekend at Cornell.
The ninth-ranked women's open squad, coming off a second-place finish at Cornell last weekend, looks to come back and knock off Ivy rival and fourth-ranked Yale on Saturday. Coach Lori Dauphiny's Tigers defeated the Bulldogs by nine seconds in last year's race.
A trip out to California is on the docket for the women's lightweight varsity squad, while the novice boat will compete in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River. The first- and second-varsity boats will row in a combined five races at the two-day Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic in Redwood Shores, Calif. The 1V boat gets a rematch with Central Florida, which it defeated just last week by nearly 20 seconds, on Saturday at 11:16 a.m. PST and will also row against Loyola (Saturday, 5:24 p.m.) and Stanford (11:32 a.m.). The 2V boat will compete twice, including races against the California 3V (Saturday, 12:34 p.m.) and Arizona State (Sunday, 10:04).
