Princeton Renews Rivalry With Dartmouth Saturday Afternoon in Hanover
April 20, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
Princeton and Dartmouth: the two names synonymous with success in the last two decades of Ivy League women's lacrosse. And though neither team will win an Ivy championship in 2007, that doesn't make Saturday's meeting between the teams any less meaningful.
The No. 15 Tigers and No. 17 Big Green meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at Scully-Fahey Field in Hanover, N.H., also the site of last year's NCAA quarterfinal classic between the teams won in overtime by Dartmouth 7-6. While Saturday's game isn't an NCAA tournament game, the result certainly could have NCAA tournament implications.
Princeton (6-5, 2-2 Ivy), which is looking to end a three-game losing streak to the Big Green, has a quick opportunity to put a Wednesday loss at Penn in the rearview mirror and begin a charge for an NCAA berth in its last five games. Dartmouth (8-4, 4-2 Ivy) plays its final Ivy League game and has a chance to finish in a tie for second place in the league standings with a win.
The Tigers are led offensively by the dynamic duo of Katie Lewis-Lamonica (34 goals) and Kathleen Miller (28 goals), each of whom has recently surpassed career milestones. Lewis-Lamonica's two goals at Penn gave her 100 goals for her career, while Miller now needs just one assist to move into second place all-time in that category at Princeton. Miller had a team-high four goals for the Tigers at Penn Wednesday.
Dartmouth defeated Harvard on Wednesday by a score of 20-10, getting six goals from Kristen Barry in the win. Senior Whitney Douthett, one of 17 finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy honoring the national player of the year, had three assists and tied the school record in that category with 92.
Princeton trailed Dartmouth 6-3 at halftime in last year's NCAA quarterfinal matchup before holding the Big Green scoreless in the second half and sending the game to overtime with 2:40 left when Holly McGarvie scored to tie the game at 6-6. After a scoreless first three-minute overtime period, Dartmouth's Casey Hazel scored 14 seconds into the second three minutes of overtime and the Big Green held on from there for a 7-6 win.
Before Dartmouth's current three-game streak in the series, Princeton had won four straight against the Big Green. Saturday's meeting is the seventh between the teams in the past five seasons, and three of the previous six games were decided by one-goal margins.
Princeton finishes its Ivy League season at
home next weekend, hosting Columbia on Friday afternoon and Brown on
Saturday as the second half of a men's/women's doubleheader at Class of
1952 Stadium. The Tigers will then travel to No. 2 Maryland and host
No. 11 Georgetown in the final week of the regular season after the
completion of its Ivy League schedule.
