Princeton Looks to Claim Goldthwait Cup on Lake Carnegie in Annual H-Y-P Regatta
April 27, 2007 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
This weekend is shaping up to be a busy weekend for the Princeton crew program, as two of the teams are racing right here on Lake Carnegie and the other two are traveling for big races. Rowing fans in the Princeton area will be treated to the always-exciting Harvard-Yale-Princeton men's lightweight regatta, while the women's opens host strong George Washington, Virginia, and Notre Dame squads immediately following the men's competition. The women's lightweights are heading up to Boston to take on Ivy rival Radcliffe on the Charles River, while the men's heavyweights will compete for the Carnegie Cup at Yale.
The 5th-ranked men's lightweights look to claim the Goldthwait Cup on the friendly waters of Lake Carnegie on Saturday. Last year's race was extremely close, with Yale edging out Princeton by one second, and Princeton edging Harvard by a mere one-tenth of a second. The Tigers last won the Cup in 1999. It had been in Crimson hands for three years before the Bulldogs won the tight race last year. Harvard has held the Cup 39 times, while Princeton has won it 23 times and Yale 19 times. This historic regatta has been rowed every year since 1922, except for a break from 1943 to 1946. The Tigers will look for that 24th win starting at 10 a.m. on Lake Carnegie, with the first varsity race going off at 11 a.m.
The Tigers are coming off of a second-place finish in a three-team race with Georgetown and Penn last Saturday. Harvard won two of five races against Navy last week, including the varsity eight race, to claim the Haines Cup. Yale last raced on April 14th in a morning/afternoon doubleheader. After sweeping Columbia and Penn in the morning, the Bulldogs swept Georgetown later in the day.
A trip to Connecticut is on the docket for the 5th-ranked men's heavies, as they take on Ivy rivals Yale and Cornell in hopes of retaining the Carnegie Cup. Princeton won the Cup last year by sweeping the Bulldogs and the Big Red in Ithaca, including a thrilling 0.1-second-win over Yale in the second varsity race. The Orange and Black rowed last week for the Compton Cup, and came in just 1.5 seconds behind Harvard. Yale is coming off of a Blackwell Cup win over Columbia and Penn, while Cornell's first varsity boat came in second in a three-team regatta with Syracuse and Navy.
The 7th-ranked women's open squad hosts George Washington, Virginia, and Notre Dame in what should be an exciting regatta among the 5-6-7 teams in the country. Virginia is currently ranked fifth, while Notre Dame is sixth. Rowing starts at 11:20 a.m. on Lake Carnegie, just after the men's lightweights' H-Y-P regatta.
Princeton raced last week against Dartmouth, Penn, and Bucknell, and won very tight races to claim the Class of 1984 Trophy. The Tigers have won the trophy every year since it started in 1985. Virginia is fresh off of an ACC championship, while George Washington placed sixth in the Atlantic-10 championships. Notre Dame last rowed at the Windermere Classic, where the Fighting Irish went 7-3 including a varsity eight win over UCLA.
The 2nd-ranked women's lightweights have an exciting race on hand for this weekend when they travel to Boston to take on Ivy rival Radcliffe. The Tigers ? also ranked 2nd at the time ? upset the then-No. 1 Crimson in last year's dual race. The dual race was the third time last season that the two teams raced, with Radcliffe having the upper hand in the previous two races. This year's race looks to be another classic between two storied programs, with Princeton at the No. 2 spot in the rankings and Radcliffe at No. 5. The Tigers have plenty of races against top-ranked teams under their belt, as they knocked off 4th-ranked Georgetown last week on the Potomac River. Radcliffe won three of four races against MIT last week.
Only the men's heavyweights are in action next week, when they host Brown starting at 9:30 a.m. The other three squads have the week off before going to the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 13. The Eastern Women's Sprints will be held in Camden, while the men will travel to Worcester, Mass., for the Men's Sprints.
Following is the schedule for this week's home regattas:
