Virginia Runs By Princeton, 19-10, In NCAA Women's Lacrosse First Round
May 13, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
The Princeton women's lacrosse team came to Virginia Sunday looking for deja vu. What the Tigers got instead, unfortunately, was a tremendous performance by a Cavalier team peaking at NCAA tournament time.
Kate Breslin and Blair Weymouth combined for 11 goals and 16 points to lead the No. 3 seeded Cavaliers to a 19-10 win over the Tigers in an NCAA first round game at Klockner Stadium, ending the Tigers' season at 10-7 and handing Princeton a first-round loss in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the tournament expanded to 16 teams in 2001.
But even after the disappointing loss, Princeton head coach Chris Sailer knew that Sunday's result was mostly about a Virginia team that had a terrific performance when it needed it the most.
"You have to give Virginia a lot of credit, they really controlled the game in every aspect," Sailer said. "They made the extra pass to find the open player, they finished their opportunities and they took advantage of our mistakes. I can't imagine they've played a much better game this year than they did today."
Sunday's game got away from the Tigers in two stretches. The first came in the final 15 minutes of the first half, when a 4-3 game turned into an 8-3 Virginia halftime lead. The second came in a seven-minute stretch midway through the second half, when a 13-7 Virginia lead quickly became 18-7 thanks to a gambling Tiger defense and transition opportunities.
Breslin scored six times for Virginia (16-3), while Weymouth had five goals and three assists. The Cavaliers, who outshot Princeton 35-21, including 20-7 in the first half, forced Sailer to replace starting goalie Kaitlyn Perrelle with senior Colleen O'Boyle midway through the second half.
"I'm just glad that we played so well in extending our season to another game," said Virginia head coach Julie Myers. "It doesn't really have anything to do with revenge. The players got through exams and had a good week of practice and really played extremely well today."
Princeton had defeated Virginia in last year's NCAA tournament first round at Klockner Stadium, defeating the Cavaliers 8-7 after falling to Virginia 16-3 in the regular season. The Tigers had lost to UVa 9-7 at Klockner Stadium seven weeks ago in the regular season, but Sunday's game was almost immediately an offensive shootout.
After forcing a turnover on Virginia's first possession, Princeton scored 1:03 in when Kristin Schwab found Alex Gangler in front. The Tigers would then go ahead 2-0 27 seconds later, when Katie Lewis-Lamonica scored the first of her team-high five goals on they day.
But Virginia would quickly recover, tying the game three minutes later and then scoring six straight goals after Lewis-Lamonica put her team ahead 3-2 seven minutes into the game. Breslin, who had three goals in the regular season game between the teams, had three goals herself in that six-goal run.
Lewis-Lamonica scored quickly after halftime for Princeton to cut the Tiger deficit to four, but Weymouth and Ashley McCulloch scored quickly after that to give their team momentum once again.
The Tigers had a ray of hope when Ashley Amo scored with 17:34 left off the draw control to pull her team within 13-7, but Virginia then put the game away with goals from five different players in the next seven minutes.
"It's difficult to see your season end on a note like this, especially for your seniors," said Sailer. "Obviously I think we could have done some things better today, but Virginia really made it difficult for us to have our best performance."
"We did a good job of staying composed after getting down early," said Myers. "There was no panic, and we stuck with what we wanted to do throughout the game."
Kathleen Miller's two goals for Princeton gave her 207 career points; she finished fourth all-time at Princeton in scoring. The Tigers made the NCAA tournament for the 10th straight season and the 15th time in the last 16 years under Sailer.
