Pellizzi's Sudden Victory OT Goal Gives Maryland 13-12 Win Over Princeton In Women's Lacrosse
May 02, 2007 | Women's Lacrosse
For the most part, Princeton's women's lacrosse game at Maryland Wednesday night was a virtuoso performance. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the show didn't have the happiest ending.
Maryland's Krista Pellizzi scored her sixth goal of the game with just four seconds left in the first sudden victory overtime period, ending a wild final minute of play, and the No. 5 Terrapins escaped with a 13-12 victory over No. 11 Princeton in one of the games of the year in women's college lacrosse.
In a game that was tied 5-5 at halftime, 12-12 at the end of regulation and still at 12-12 after the first two overtime periods, the final minute of play was the wildest of all. First, Princeton threw an errant pass in the final minute over the end line, giving the Terps possession of the ball. The Tigers would then get the ball back with under 30 seconds left, only to have Maryland's Katie Pumphrey strip Kathleen Miller on a drive to the goal that might have won it for Princeton. Finally, the Terps got the ball behind the net to Pellizzi, who rolled around the left side and sent a bounce shot into the net with four seconds on the clock.
The game featured 11 ties, including nine ties at every score from 1-1 to 9-9. Only once in the game did a team hold a two-goal lead, and that was Princeton with 11 minutes left when Miller scored her fourth goal of the game.
"It was really a great game that didn't end our way," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "I'm very happy with the level of our play. It's probably been since the Duke game (March 11) that we've played this well overall in every aspect of the game."
Miller had five goals and an assist for Princeton (9-6), including the goal that sent the game to overtime with 55 seconds left in regulation. Her six points gave her 200 for her career, moving her to fifth all-time at Princeton.
After getting the only two-goal lead of the game at 11-9, the Tigers saw Maryland (15-3) score three straight to take the lead before Miller sent the game to overtime. First Dana Dobbie scored with 9:34 left to make it 11-10, and Caitlyn McFadden then found the net five minutes later to tie the score. Pellizzi put Maryland ahead 12-11 with 3:27 left on a free-position shot.
Princeton led three times early in the second half, at 6-5 on Miller's goal 1:42 into the half, 7-6 on Katie Lewis-Lamonica's goal 1:09 after that and 8-7 when Anne Murray scored with 23 minutes left. Pellizzi gave Maryland a 9-8 lead with 20 minutes left, but the Tigers then scored three straight after that to take their only two-goal lead.
Lewis-Lamonica had three goals for Princeton, giving her 42 for the season, while Holly McGarvie, Kristin Schwab, Ashley Amo and Murray all scored goals for the Tigers.
Dobbie added three goals for Maryland, while Kelly Kasper had two. Maryland outshot Princeton 35-24, including 17-9 in the second half.
The Terps also won 20 of the game's 29 draw controls, but Princeton won the ground ball battle 17-14.
Princeton also lost to Maryland at Ludwig Field by the same 13-12 sudden victory overtime score two seasons ago, but the Tigers would defeat the Terps 16-8 in the NCAA tournament the next week at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The Tigers conclude the regular season with a home game against No. 8 Georgetown Sunday afternoon at 1:00 at Class of 1952 Stadium. Princeton's six seniors will be recognized in a ceremony prior to the game.
