Parros and Stanley Cup Visit Baker Rink
August 24, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
As is tradition every member of a Stanley Cup championship winning team gets to spend 24 hours with the cup during the offseason. On Friday, former Princeton men's hockey captain George Parros '03 brought the cup to Hobey Baker Rink where he and the cup met with fans, staff and alumni.
Parros received the Stanley Cup on Thursday evening after Anaheim Duck teammate Ryan Shannon had it New York City the previous day. Parros' busy schedule began on Friday morning when he made an appearance at Delbarton where he went to high school. Parros and the Cup then traveled to Princeton, arriving at 12:30 p.m. Once at Baker Rink, Troy Ewanchyna '94 introduced Parros, who walked out of the lockerroom tunnel with the Cup overhead to applause from more than 250 people in attendance.
Princeton head coach Guy Gadowsky then made a few remarks before handing the microphone to Parros. After a few words from Parros, photos began as several area youth hockey teams, fans, alumni and Princeton staff had the chance to have their photos taken with Parros and the Stanley Cup. After an hour on the ice, Parros met with several Princeton hockey alums in the Tiger locker room before departing around 1:45 p.m., for an afternoon flight to Pittsburgh, where he was set to meet up with his extended family for a barbecue with the Stanley Cup.
"As soon as I found out what day I had the Cup, one of my first calls was here to see if this would be a possibility," said Parros. "Growing up in New Jersey and playing games in the rink from a young age, it was a dream to be able to play college hockey at Princeton, and now to be able to bring the Stanley Cup back here and share this experience with my former teammates, staff members and the Princeton community is truly special."
"It was really great of George to fit us into his day with the Stanley Cup," said Gadowsky. "He is a true testament to the program we are building here at Princeton and its great to have him and the Stanley Cup here at Baker Rink."
While Parros' time with the Cup ended Friday night in Pittsburgh, the Cup is now headed to Edmonton where Mark Hartigan will spend Saturday with it.
