Men's Soccer Hosts Colgate Friday Night At Powers Field
September 12, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Princeton plays Colgate in men's soccer for the first time in program history tonight, with the Tigers hoping for a better result than in their last outing against another Patriot League foe, American.
The Tigers (0-2), forced to play with just 10 players after an early second-half red card against American, had their chances but couldn't get the equalizer in what ended as a 2-0 victory for the Eagles.
AU took advantage of its extra player by firing 26 shots at the Princeton goal, but Tiger goalie Joe Walter responded with a career-best 11 saves to help keep the game close.
Head coach Jim Barlow used his bench often on a hot day in Washington, with seven reserves seeing action. One of those players off the bench, senior Dan Cummins, had perhaps Princeton's best chance to tie the game in the second half, but AU goalie Chris Sedlak made the save in the 61st minute.
Colgate (2-2) won a pair of games at home last weekend, defeating Richmond 1-0 on Friday before returning 48 hours later to outplay Albany by a 3-1 score. The Raiders had lost games to 14th-ranked Northwestern and Northern Illinois on the season's first weekend.
Two freshmen, Tim Sedwitz and Teddy Schneider, have started both of Princeton's first two games, while fellow freshman Brandon Busch has seen action in reserve in the first two games.
With the exception of the red card against American, the Tigers have been stingy in the violation department this season. Princeton has been called for just 14 fouls in two games compared to 27 for its opponents. The Tigers were whistled for just four fouls in the season-opening game two weeks ago against Loyola here at Powers Field.
Freshman Steven Miller, who went to high school in Bucks County at Council Rock North, has two of Colgate's five goals this season. He was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week after scoring both game-winning goals for the Raiders last weekend.
After playing three games in a 14-day span to begin the 2007 season, Princeton has a busy upcoming week with three games in seven days, beginning with a trip to local rival Seton Hall on Monday night (7 p.m.)
The Tigers will then travel to the West Coast for the first time in program history, playing games at Stanford against the host Cardinal (Fri., Sept. 21 at 10:30 ET) and against California (Sun., Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. ET). The Tigers played a scoreless tie against Stanford when the Cardinal visited Lourie-Love Field a year ago.
