PRINCETON -- Cornell's Abbi Horn scored with 21 seconds left in
regulation to lift the Big Red to a 4-3 win over the
Princeton
field hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. Junior Holly
McGarvie scored twice in the game for the Tigers.
Princeton took a 2-0 lead
in the opening half with a pair of goals off deflections. Sophomore Tina Bortz
deflected a free hit from junior Sarah Reinprecht into the Cornell goal for her
team-leading fifth goal of the season. That goal came in the 26th minute
and Princeton made the score 2-0 seven minutes
later when McGarvie redirected a shot from sophomore Kaitlyn Perrelle at the
top of the circle.
Princeton led 2-0 after a
half, but Cornell scored the game's next three goals in a span of 15 minutes to
take a 3-2 lead. Katie Bradshaw scored on a rebound off a corner two minutes
into the half to move Cornell within a goal and Mandy Malzberg evened the score
in the 55th minute when she deflected a Kate Thompson pass. Cornell
went ahead 3-2 at 54:36 when Alyssa DePaola scored off a pass from Catie De Stio.
Down a goal, Princeton
picked up the pressure and scored at 64:39 to draw even. On a corner, senior
Paige Schmidt took a shot that was stopped by Cornell's goalkeeper Shannon
Prescott, but the rebound laid in front and McGarvie lifted it over her for her
second goal of the game and her fourth of the season.
The game appeared headed to overtime but a Cornell rush in
the closing minute doomed the Tigers. Cornell entered the Tigers circle on a
2-on-1 and De Stio managed a shot that Perrelle made a defensive save on, but
Cornell was able to earn a corner. Following that attempt, the ball came to the
front of the goal and ended up on the stick of Abbi Horn, who slid it by Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray to put
Cornell ahead 4-3.
Princeton falls to 4-4
overall and 3-1 in the Ivy League, while Cornell is now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in
league play. Princeton completes the weekend tomorrow afternoon against Richmond at 1 p.m.
