Field Hockey Posts 5-1 Win Over Richmond
September 30, 2007 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Sophomore Kaitlin Donovan scored two goals and junior Candice Arner had a goal and an assist to lead the Princeton field hockey team to a 5-1 win against Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium.
Princeton looked to start strong and bounce back from yesterday's loss to Cornell, and did so when Donovan scored her first goal of the game and her second of the season on a deflection off a free hit at 7:11. Arner hit the ball into the circle and Donovan deflected it upwards and into the top of the goal.
Donovan, who was inserted into the starting lineup on Sunday for the first time this season, made the score 2-0 eight minutes later with her second goal of the game, which came unassisted. Donovan collected a loose ball in front of Richmond goalkeeper Jacki Raithel and wrapped it around her and into the goal.
The first half ended with the Tigers holding a 2-0 edge, and Princeton started the second half with two goals in the first five minutes to make it 4-0. At 38:32, junior Sarah Reinprecht got the ball following a corner and her shot towards the net was redirected by sophomore Kaitlyn Perrelle for Perrelle's second goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later the Tigers made it 4-0 on a similar play. This time the ball came to junior captain Candice Arner, whose shot towards the cage hit a Richmond stick and went in to give Arner her first goal of the season.
Richmond got on the board at 46:16 when Alex Malatesta scored on a penalty stroke, but Princeton regained the four-goal margin when sophomore Katherine Cape deflected a shot from junior Kristin Schwab in the closing minutes.
Princeton outshot Richmond 26-6 and outcornered the Spiders 15-1. Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer King made her first collegiate start and blocked three shots for the shutout.
The win lifted Princeton to 5-4 overall this season. Princeton is back in action in a week's time when third-ranked Connecticut visits Class of '52 Stadium.
