Back in Action
Princeton returns to Hobey Baker Rink to open the 2008 portion of its schedule this weekend against Ivy and ECAC Hockey foes Dartmouth and Harvard.
Last Time Out
Princeton returned to action last weekend at Minnesota State and Nebraska-Omaha following a 20-day layoff during the holidays. Princeton dropped the first game of its two-game trip on Friday 6-1 at Minnesota State, but rebounded two days later with a 5-3 win at Nebraska-Omaha.
The Win at UNO
Trailing 2-1 after two periods, Princeton scored four goals in the third period to come from behind and defeat the Mavericks 5-3 on Sunday night in Omaha. Sophomore Mark Magnowski led Princeton with three points in the win, while senior Mike Moore and freshman Taylor Fedun each added two points in the win as well.
League Play
Princeton is right at .500 at 4-4 overall in ECAC Hockey and will play all but one of its remaining games this season against league opponents. That stretch begins against Dartmouth and Harvard and continues next weekend at Yale and Brown before the Tigers are off for three weeks during final exams.
This Weekend's Opponents
Princeton vs. Dartmouth
Princeton hosts Dartmouth on Friday afternoon in the 182nd meeting between the two schools. Dartmouth leads the all-time series 89-79-13, but trails Princeton 40-39-6 in games played in Princeton. The Tigers are 4-1-2 in their last seven league games against Dartmouth, but dropped two games last season to the Big Green in the ECAC Hockey playoffs.
Last Year's Series
Princeton took three of four points from the Big Green last season, skating to a 3-3 tie in November in Hanover and winning 3-0 at home in February. Junior Brandan Kushniruk scored in the tie, while sophomore Mark Magnowski netted the game winner in the home shutout. Dartmouth then won the two games in the quarterfinals by scores of 7-2 and 3-2.
Scouting the Big Green
Dartmouth is 5-5-1 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC Hockey after 11 games. The Big Green split its two games last weekend at the Denver Cup, topping Northern Michigan 4-1 and falling to Denver 5-3. Dartmouth also has wins over Vermont, St. Lawrence, Union and Bentley.
Princeton vs. Harvard
Princeton is 49-143-9 all-time against Harvard and trails in the series 22-51-4 on home ice. The two teams split the series last season with each team winning in the opponents building. Harvard swept the Tigers the previous two seasons.
Last Year's Series
Princeton and Harvard split their two meetings last season. Princeton won the first meeting 4-2 in November in Cambridge as Princeton came from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 as sophomores Cam MacIntyre and Dan Bartlett each scored. In February in Princeton, Harvard came from behind to top Princeton 4-2 as Princeton led 2-1 after a period on goals from Mark Magnowski and Brandan Kushniruk.
Scouting the Crimson
Harvard is 6-6-2 overall and 5-3-1 in ECAC Hockey following 14 games this season. Harvard is winless in its last six games at 0-5-1 with only a tie at Vermont breaking up five losses.
Off-Ice Honor
Senior Landis Stankievech was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. The senior was one of three Princetonians to win a Rhodes Scholarship and he will study at Oxford next year. Twenty Princeton athletes have won Rhodes Scholarships, including Mike Spence, a hockey player and recent Nobel Prize for Economics winner, and Bill Bradley, a basketball player and politician. Stankievech scored Princeton's second goal at UNO has scored in both of his career appearances against the Mavericks.
In the 50s
Brett Wilson and Lee Jubinville each recently joined Princeton's 50-point club. Wilson now has 56 points to his credit and leads active Tigers in goals, assists and points. Jubinville surpassed 50 points in Princeton's win over Union and ranks second to Wilson in all three categories.
Point Leaders
Cam MacIntyre and Lee Jubinville each have 15 points in 13 games this year to lead Princeton in scoring. MacIntyre was recently selected to InsideCollegeHockey.com's Mid-Season All-League team. MacIntyre scored Princeton's lone goal in Friday's loss to Minnesota State, while Jubinville assisted on the goal.
Game Winners
Mark Magnowski has scored the game-winning goal in three of Princeton's six wins this season. All three of his goals have been deciding goals. On Sunday at Nebraska-Omaha, Magnowski had a hand in three-straight goals as Princeton came from behind to win 5-3. He scored the game winner and set up the other two.
Offensive Defensemen
The defensive pairing of senior Mike Moore and freshman Taylor Fedun was responsible for four points in the UNO win as each recorded a goal and an assist in the win. Fedun's goal made the score 3-2 and gave Princeton its first lead, while Moore's was an empty-netter for insurance in the final minute. Moore leads all Tiger defensemen with eight points while Fedun leads all freshmen with six.
Balanced Effort
Princeton offense has been balanced all season as the Tigers' 37 goals have come from 16 different skaters. In addition, 21 of Princeton's 22 skaters have registered at least one point this season.
Special Teams
Princeton scored three of its five goals at Nebraska-Omaha on special teams. Princeton's second and third goals came on the power play, while their fourth was shorthanded.
Shorthanded
Mark Magnowski's shorthanded goal on Sunday at Nebraska-Omaha was Princeton's first of the season. Princeton has allowed five shorthanded goals this season.
Reaching Five
Princeton's five goals scored in Sunday's win was its highest output since scoring six goals at Yale in the season opener. Thirteen games elapsed between those two outings.
Above .500
After starting last season 1-6-2, the Tigers finished out the season 14-10-1. With a 6-8 record this season, the Tigers are 20-18-1 over the last 39 games.
Home and Away
Princeton's home record this season is 1-6, while it record away from home is 5-2.

Princeton completes its inter session schedule next weekend when travels north to visit Ivy and ECAC Hockey foes Yale and Brown next Friday and Saturday.
