Princeton Falls To Mansfield In Sprint Football
October 24, 2008 | Sprint Football
When Mansfield University decided to add sprint football this season, it went out and recruited players from all over the country, including states like Texas, California and even Alaska. The school then put together a modest four-game schedule for its first season as it attempted to see what the reaction would be.
Not even the most fervent supporter of the sport could be more pleased. The Mountaineers drew nearly 4,000 fans for each of its two home games and then hit the road to pick up the first win in program history with a 28-3 win over Princeton Friday night at Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
Mansfield, which figures to play a full CSFL schedule next year, dropped heavyweight football after the 2006 season after losing 29 of the final 30 games played. The rebirth of the sport in the form of sprint football generated a great deal of excitement on the campus located 50 miles north of Williamsport, Pa., and a large Mansfield student contingent traveled to Princeton for this game.
Princeton took an early lead on a 22-yard Reid Fitz field goal late in the first quarter before the visitors took control with a pair of second quarter scores. The Mounties led 21-3 at the end of the third.
Princeton did manage to have some drama at the end of the game, as the final drive for the Tigers ended at the Mansfield 1 as time expired.
Princeton was led by Brendan Reilly, who made 15 tackles. Mansfield outgained Princeton 246-29 on the ground.
The Tigers (0-5) finish the season next Friday night at Penn.
