October 24, 2008 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON -- The 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team defeated 19th-ranked Bucknell 11-9 on Friday night to pick up its 11th win of the season. Sophomore Jeff Cole scored four goals in the win as the Tigers avenged last week's loss to the Bison.
Princeton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game, but Bucknell quickly evened the score at 2-2, only to have the Tigers get the final goal of the first quarter to lead 3-2. The Tigers maintained the one goal edge at the half and also held a one-goal lead after three periods, despite leading by two goals for much of the third period. Princeton finally pulled out its margin in the final quarter before winning the game by two.
Cole, Princeton leading scorer this season, scored four goals and now has 30 for the season. Juniors Mark Zalewski added three goals and classmate Douglas Wigley had two. Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Mike Merlone made 10 saves.
The game was the first of four this weekend for the Tigers as Princeton looks to finish atop the Southern Division standings and earn the top seed for Southerns. Princeton is now 11-8 overall and 5-1 in the division with two games left. Princeton hosts George Washington on Saturday and Navy on Sunday. Navy is already 6-1. Princeton hosts GW tomorrow at 1 p.m. and has a non-league game tomorrow night against Iona at 8 p.m.
