This Week's Storylines
Drop the Puck
The puck drops on the 2008-09 Princeton men's hockey season this weekend with the Showdown at Meehan. Princeton faces Brown in the regular-season opener on Friday night, then faces the Ontario Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in an exhibition game.
The Second Showdown
This year's Showdown at Meehan is the second of a three-year agreement between Princeton, Brown and Yale to play this showcase. The tournament moves to Princeton to open the 2009-10 season.
CVI
Tonight's game kicks off the 106th season of varsity hockey at Princeton. The first game was played on Nov. 30, 1900 against the Drisler School. Princeton did not compete for two seasons during World War II.
It's About Time
Ivy League rules mandate that men's hockey teams can begin practicing on Oct. 15 and can play regular season games the weekend of Oct. 31. Friday's game will take place exactly three weeks after the first regular season games of the season, which were played on Oct. 10, five days before Princeton's first official practice.

Princeton has increased upon its win total in each of the past five seasons. After a three-win season in 2002-03, the Tigers won five games in 2003-04, eight games in 2004-05, 10 games in 2005-06, 15 games in 2006-07 and 21 games a season ago.

Non Conference Wrap
Princeton's win at Robert Morris was its final non-league game of the 2007-08 season. Princeton finished the year 3-4 in those games with wins at Yale, Neb.-Omaha and Robert Morris, and losses to Quinnipiac, Minnesota State and Notre Dame (2).

Exhibition Win
Princeton got in its first competitive action last weekend with a 6-2 win over Western Ontario in an exhibition game at Baker Rink. The game was penalty filled as each team collected 13 penalties in the game.
Four Apples
Sophomore defenseman Cam Ritchie had assists on four of Princeton's six goals in last Saturday's win. The sophomore had 11 points during his freshman campaign.
First Timers
Four of Princeton's six goals in Saturday's win came from players who have yet to score a regular season goal for the team, three of which were wearing the Orange and Black for the first time. Freshmen Brodie Zuk and Derrick Pallis and junior Kevin Crane scored power-play goals, while sophomore Sam Sabky scored at even-strength.
Point Getters
A total of 10 players had points in Saturday's win. After Ritchie's four points, junior Kevin Kaiser had two, a goal and an assist, and eight others added a single point.
In Goal
All three Tiger goaltenders played a period in Saturday's win. Senior Thomas Sychterz and junior Zane Kalemba each played a shutout period with Sychterz making 14 saves in the win and Kalemba stopping nine. Sophomore Alan Reynolds had three saves in the middle period.
Power Play
Princeton was 3 for 11 on the power play in Saturday's win, with two of the three goals coming with two-man advantages. The Tigers killed 10 of 12 Western Ontario power-plays.
Upcoming Opponents
Princeton vs. Brown
Princeton and Brown meet for the 143rd time on Friday night with Brown holding a 78-57-7 series edge. The Bears also lead 41-25-3 at home, but Princeton has won the last four games in the series and is 6-2-3 against Brown under Guy Gadowsky.
Last Season
Princeton swept its season series from the Bears a year ago, skating to a 6-2 win in Providence and a 3-2 triumph at home. At Brown, Lee Jubinville and Brett Wilson each had four points, while Wilson had the game winner in the home win.
Scouting the Bears
Brown is also opening its season this Friday night. Like Princeton, Brown also has one exhibition game under their belts, a 1-0 shutout win over Trois-Rivieres last Thursday night. Brown was picked to finish 12th in both the media and coaches polls.
On the Docket
Friday night will mark Princeton's first non-league game of the season, although it will be played against a league opponent. The Tigers have a similar game scheduled against Quinnipiac on Dec. 3. Princeton could also face Rensselaer in non-league play in their tournament in November. Princeton will face Northeastern, Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota State and Robert Morris as well.
Playing UOIT
Princeton will take on the Ontario Institute of Technology on Saturday for the second season in a row. Princeton topped the Ridgebacks 5-0 last season.

Season Openers
Princeton is 58-42-5 all-time in season-opening games. That includes a 36-21-2 record at home, a 11-12-0 record on the road and an 11-9-3 record at neutral sites. Last season Princeton defeated Yale 6-2 to open the year and is now 1-0-1 in its last two openers.
Balanced Effort
Princeton offense was balanced last season as the Tigers' 112 goals have come from 20 different skaters. In addition, 21 of Princeton's 22 skaters registered at least one point this season. Princeton also had 14 skaters with double-digit point totals.
Offense From the Back
Princeton had four defensemen with double-digit point totals last season. Princeton last accomplished that in the 1994-95 season.
Ranked Teams
Princeton faced eight ranked teams last season and was 2-6 in those games. Princeton fell to Clarkson 6-2 and 4-3, Rensselaer 4-3 , Notre Dame 4-2 and 7-0 and North Dakota 5-1. Princeton's wins both came over Harvard by scores of 2-1 and 4-1. Princeton's first ranked opponent this season will be Cornell next Friday.
In The Pros
Last week Darroll Powe '06 became the eighth Princeton hockey player to appear in the National Hockey League. He has now played in three games with Philadelphia and joins George Parros and Jeff Halpern in NHL this season.
On the Horizon
Princeton jumps into ECAC play next weekend with home games against Cornell and Colgate. The game with Cornell on Friday will be televised live on ESPNU.
Individual Notes
Leading Scorer
Princeton returns senior Lee Jubinville, its leading scorer from a season ago. Jubinville posted 39 points to lead the team and the league and was the Ivy and ECAC Player of the Year and a first-team All-America. He was also Princeton's first-ever candidate for the Hobey Baker Award.
Leading Career Point Getter
Despite Jubinville's season, classmate Brett Wilson still holds the scoring lead among active Tigers with 79 points. He has scored 34 goals and 45 assists and has a one-point edge on Jubinville in the rankings. He was a second-team All-ECAC selection last year.
MOP
Junior goaltender Zane Kalemba was named the Most Outstanding Player at last year's ECAC Tournament after posting three shutouts in five games and lifting Princeton to the title. He, along with sophomore Kevin Lohry, were named to the All-Tournament team.
Double Digits
Princeton returns 12 of its 14 double-digit point getters from last season. The group includes nine forwards and three defensemen.
New Faces
Princeton welcomes four new faces into the lineup this season. Freshmen Derrick Pallis, Brodie Zuk, Scott McNeill and Marc Hagel join the team, replacing a class of five that graduated last season.
The Departed
Princeton said goodbye to five players last season: Kyle Hagel, Mike Moore, Erik Pridham, Keith Shattenkirk and Landis Stankievech.
NHL Rookie Camps
Junior Cam MacIntyre and sophomore Matt Godlewski skated in NHL Rookie Camps this summer. MacIntyre was at Pittsburgh's camp while Godlewski was at Chicago's.
