Kushniruk's Goal Lifts Men's Hockey to 2-1 Win

CANTON, N.Y. -- Senior captain Brandan Kushniruk scored at 6:41 of the third period to lift the eighth-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 2-1 win against St. Lawrence on Friday night at Appleton Arena. Kusniruk;s goal came 50 seconds after St. Lawrence evened the game at 1-1.
Following a scoreless opening period in which the Tigers outshot St. Lawrence 8-5, Princeton went ahead 1-0 at 4:10 of the second period when sophomore Mike Kramer scored through a screen from the top of the right circle. Sophomore Matt Arhontas and junior mark Magnowski dug the puck out of the corner and added assists on the goal.
St. Lawrence doubled up the Tigers on shots in both the second and third periods and drew even at 5:51 of the third when Casey Parenteau capped an end-to-end rush with a goal off a wrist shot.
The game was only tied for 50 seconds though, before Kushniruk scored the game winner. Sophomore Kevin Lohry gained the puck in the corner and drove to the net. He sent a centering pass into the crease and in the scrum that ensued; Kushniruk slid a backhander by St. Lawrence goaltender Alex Petizian for his first of the season.
Princeton junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made 26 saves for the win and has now allowed a goal or less in each of his seven games played this season. Petizian made 17 saves in the loss.
Princeton's win improved the Tigers to 6-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in league play, while the Saints fell to 4-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the league. Princeton's win snapped an eight game winless streak at St. Lawrence was the Tigers first win in Appleton Arena since Feb. 2, 2001. The Tigers visit Clarkson tomorrow at 4 p.m.
