Princeton Announces 2009 Women's Lacrosse Schedule

PRINCETON, N.J. (11/3/08) ? Princeton head women's lacrosse coach Chris Sailer has announced the 2009 women's lacrosse schedule.

On the 16-game schedule are nine non-conference games and seven games played at home at Class of 1952 Stadium. Princeton will play five teams that were in the NCAA Tournament last season, including: Duke, Maryland, Penn, Temple and Virginia.

"At Princeton, we've always prided ourselves on playing a tough schedule,” Sailer said. “The Ivy League is one of the nation's most competitive conferences, so our slate of Ivy games is intense. But we also look to load our out-of-conference schedule with the best teams we can find. We think the experience of playing against the top competition prepares us well for what we'll face in the post-season, and for the Tigers, winning our league and competing for the National Championship are our goals year in and year out."

The Tigers kick off the season on Saturday, Feb. 28 hosting Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m. Princeton has won the last two games with the Blue Jays, including a 7-5 victory last season. Hopkins concluded the 2008 season with an 8-9 record, to finish third in the American Lacrosse Conference (ALC).

Princeton will make the short trip up Route 1 to Rutgers on Wednesday, March 4 for a 7 p.m., match. The Tigers will be looking for its sixth straight win in the series. The Scarlet Knights were fourth in the BIG EAST last year with a 7-10 overall mark.

Duke hosts Princeton on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. The Tigers hold an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series and picked up a 13-8 victory last season. The Blue Devils finished third in the ACC and concluded their season in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, falling to Penn in overtime.

Princeton returns home on Saturday, March 14 to host Penn State. The Tigers are coming off of a one-goal win over the Nittany Lions from last season, and lead the series 18-12. Penn State finished fifth in the ALC with a 5-12 record last year.

Princeton will head south during mid-March to face James Madison and Virginia. James Madison hosts Princeton on Wednesday, March 18, and three days later on Saturday, March 21 Virginia will play host. The Tigers have lost just one game to the Dukes and have won the last two games with the last win being a 17-10 victory. The series with Virginia is even at 13 games apiece, with the Tigers winning last year's game, 8-7. The Cavaliers won the ACC Tournament but fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Atlantic-10 champion Temple will visit campus on Wednesday, March 25 for a 7 p.m., game. Princeton is on a 10-game tear over Temple, including a 15-7 win last season.

The Ivy League schedule gets underway on Saturday, March 28 when Cornell hosts Princeton at 3 p.m. The Tigers lead the series, 28-2 and have won the last 21 games.

On Wednesday, April 1, Princeton hosts Columbia at 7 p.m. The Tigers are undefeated in the series with the Lions, 10-0.

Yale hosts Princeton on Saturday, April 4. The Tigers won last year's meeting, 9-6 and led the series, 20-9-1. The following Saturday, April 11, Princeton hosts Harvard. The Tigers have won the last 16 games versus the Crimson.

The Tigers hit the road for the next two games, first stopping off at defending Ivy League champion Penn on Wednesday, April 15. The Quakers won the last two games, including a 9-5 victory in 2008. Penn was the runner-up in the national championship last year with a 17-2 record. Princeton and Dartmouth will battle it out on Saturday, April 18. The series between the two squads is even at 15-15, with the Big Green picking up the 13-12 win last year.

The final Ivy League game will be versus Brown on Saturday, April 25 at Class of 1952 Stadium. Princeton owns a 27-3 record in the series, winning the last 18 contests.

On Wednesday, April 29, Princeton hosts Loyola in the final regular-season home game of the season. The Great Danes finished fifth in the BIG EAST last season with a 6-10 overall record. The two teams last met in 2007, when Princeton recorded a 14-5 win. The Tigers are 7-3 all-time in the series.

The final game of the season will be at Maryland on Saturday, May 2. The Terrapins have won the last two meetings, with Princeton's last win coming in 2006. Maryland finished tied with Virginia at the top of the ACC standings last year. The Terps concluded the season with an 18-3 record, falling to Duke in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

The first round of the NCAA tournament will be held on May 10, with the quarterfinals on May 16. The NCAA championship will be May 22-24 at Towson University.
