Late First-Half Surge Stands as CCSU Tops Men's Basketball 67-56
December 20, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Doug Davis led Princeton with 18 points while Dan Mavraides had 13 and Nick Lake had 10. Princeton looked to limit CCSU's top scorer Ken Horton, who averaged 20.9 points per game entering the contest, but Horton contributed a late string of points that helped the Blue Devils seal the game.
Horton finished with 18 while Robby Ptacek led all scorers with 20 and Shemik Thompson contributed 15. While Horton sat for the first half's last 8:44 in foul trouble, Ptacek and Thompson paced a 10-0 run and the game remained tight into the that evaporated a 17-8 Princeton lead.
The Tigers shot just 32% (8 of 25) in the first half and made only three of their 16 three-point attempts before the break. Princeton warmed up significantly from the field after halftime, hitting 15 of 32 (46.9%), but the threes weren't falling with any more regularity and the Tigers had only a brief lead in the second half.
Soon after, Lake scored five straight points, including a three-pointer that gave Princeton a 41-40 lead with 10:21 to play, but CCSU quickly answered and never trailed again.
Princeton will return from a nine-day break from competition with a Dec. 30 game at Lafayette. The Tigers will play at home again Jan. 3 to host UNC Greensboro for a game televised on ESPNU at noon.
