No. 7 Women's Lacrosse Opens 2008 at No. 14 Hopkins
February 29, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
In just a few short years, the matchup between Princeton and Johns Hopkins in women's lacrosse has developed into a nice rivalry. Another tight game might be on the horizon Saturday when the Tigers begin their 36th season of women's lacrosse against the Blue Jays at Homewood Field at 1 p.m.
The teams first met in 2005 and have played a trio of close games, including an overtime win for Princeton last season and an 8-7 victory for Hopkins in Baltimore the year before. Holly McGarvie's sudden-victory OT goal won it for the Tigers last year; Princeton had extended the game into sudden-victory time by scoring with just 23 seconds left in the first six minutes of overtime.
Princeton, now in its 22nd season under head coach Chris Sailer, was ranked No. 8 in the first IWLCA poll of the season and now is at No. 7 heading into Saturday's game. Hopkins is 1-1, having lost at George Mason and defeated George Washington, and is at No. 14 in the rankings.
The Tigers have made 10 straight NCAA tournament appearances and look like a good bet for an 11th straight thanks to talent all over the field. Princeton plays its home opener Wednesday against Rutgers, then has a huge test next Saturday when No. 3 Duke comes to town for a 3:30 game to be played on the FieldTurf at Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
