McGarvie Scores Four, Tigers Shut Down Hopkins Late In 7-5 Women's Lacrosse Victory
March 01, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
Princeton got four goals from junior Holly McGarvie and shut down the Johns Hopkins offense for the final 19 minutes of the game in a 7-5 victory over the Blue Jays in the Tigers' women's lacrosse opener at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon.
McGarvie scored three times in the first half, the final time with 1:50 left to give No. 7 Princeton (1-0) a 5-4 lead at halftime, then salted the game away for the Tigers with 5:25 left in the second half with a goal that gave Princeton a 7-5 advantage.
Meanwhile, the Princeton defense didn't allow a goal after Kadie Stamper scored to tie the game at 5-5 11 minutes into the second half, helped by an 11-3 advantage in draw controls and six saves from Kaitlyn Perrelle. Kristin Schwab had the eventual game winner for the Tigers, getting fouled and scoring on an eight-meter attempt with 18 minutes left.
Perrelle had a save on Stamper with 10 minutes left and her team ahead by just one goal, and the Tigers were then able to stave off two free-position attempts from No. 14 Hopkins (1-2), including one that hit the post. The Tigers finally gained a clear with just more than six minutes left, and McGarvie scored unassisted to give her team its first two-goal lead.
The Tigers, who improved to 3-1 all-time against Hopkins, never trailed but also never held more than a one-goal lead in a seesaw game until McGarvie's final score. The Blue Jays outshot Princeton 24-15, including 15-6 in the second half, but scored just twice in the final 40 minutes of the game.
McGarvie scored first for Princeton, 2:14 into the game, but the Blue Jays tied it five minutes later. Christine Casaceli put the Tigers ahead again a minute later, but Hopkins tied it again two minutes later. McGarvie's goal just 30 seconds after that put her team ahead again, but Katie Dumais scored for JHU several minutes later to tie it at 3.
Princeton's Katie-Lewis Lamonica, who was questionable for the game, and Hopkins' Kim Dubansky then traded goals before McGarvie put the Tigers ahead at halftime.
The Tigers scored on both their eight-meter attempts and won eight of 10 draw controls in the first half. Princeton also had 16 ground balls to 13 for the Blue Jays.
Princeton plays its home opener Wednesday night against Rutgers at Class of 1952 Stadium. A live audio broadcast of the game will be available at GoPrincetonTigers.com.
