This Week's Storylines 12 of 16 Year End Honors This Weekend's Opponents Team Notes
Playoff Time
The Princeton men's hockey team returns to action for the quarterfinals of the 2008 ECAC Hockey Tournament this weekend at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton finished the regular season in second place and received a first-round bye.
Ivy Title
Princeton's win at Dartmouth on Feb. 16 clinched the Tigers their first Ivy League title since the 1999 season when Princeton shared the title with Yale. Princeton's last outright Ivy title came in 1953. Princeton now has five Ivy League championships. The Tigers finished the season 9-1 in Ivy games, setting a new team record for Ivy wins in a season.
Second-Place ECAC Finish
Princeton's second-place finish during the ECAC's regular season marked the team's highest regular season finish. Previously, Princeton's high was fourth, which was accomplished in the 1998-99 seasons.
First Round Bye
Princeton secured a first-round bye with its weekend sweep of Colgate and Cornell on Feb. 22-23. It is Princeton's first series bye since ECAC Hockey adopted its current playoff format for 2002-03 season.
Each Year a Little Better
Princeton has increased upon its win total in each of the past five seasons. After a three-win season in 2002-03, the Tigers won five games in 2003-04, eight games in 2004-05, 10 games in 2005-06, 15 games in 2006-07 and 17 games this season.
17 Wins
Princeton's 17 wins this season ranks fifth-best in program history for wins in a season. Princeton's high came in 1998-99 with 20 and the Tigers had 18 in 1994-95, 1996-97 and 1997-98.
14 ECAC Hockey Wins
Princeton's 14 league wins sets a program record for league wins in a season. Princeton's previous high was 13, which occurred twice, in 1967-68 and 1998-99.
No. 16
Princeton is currently ranked 16th in the latest USCHO.com poll and is the first team receiving votes in the USA Today poll.
Princeton has won 12 of its last 16 games dating back to a 5-3 win at Nebraska-Omaha on Dec. 30, 2007. In that span the Tigers have doubled their opponents 59-33.
Last Time Out
Princeton was swept for the first time in eight league weekends by Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The only other time this season that Princeton was swept in a league weekend came Nov. 9-10 at home against St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
The Clarkson Game
After Clarkson opened the scoring, freshman Matt Arhontas and junior Lee Jubinville scored to give Princeton a 2-1 lead after a period. Clarkson tied the score at 2-2 in the second before a late goal by senior Mike Moore gave Princeton a 3-2 lead entering the third period. Clarkson though rallied with an early goal and one midway through the third to pick up a 4-3 win and claim the league's regular-season title.
The St. Lawrence Game
Princeton got out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the second period on the strength of power-play goals from senior Mike Moore and junior Brett Wilson, but the Saints scored three unanswered goals to come from behind for a 3-2 win over Princeton.
Special Teams
All five of Princeton's goals during the Clarkson/St. Lawrence weekend came on special teams. There were four goals scored on the power play and one came shorthanded.
Third Period Rallies
Princeton came from behind in the third period four times in the second part of the season. Princeton rallied from a 2-1 deficit at Nebraska-Omaha, a 1-0 deficit at home against Harvard, a 2-1 deficit at Yale and a 1-0 deficit at home against Brown. Princeton won just once last season when trailing after two periods.
Scoring More
Princeton has scored four or more goals in nine of its last 16 games. Princeton scored seven goals on Feb. 22 against Colgate, its highest goal total of the season. It came exactly one year after Princeton scored seven goals at home in a win over Clarkson.
Leading Offense
Princeton's offense led ECAC Hockey in scoring in league games with 75 goals scored in 22 games for an average of 3.41. Princeton also ranks atop the league in overall goals per game with 3.24, which also ranks 12th in the nation in scoring.
Home and Away
Princeton's record away from Hobey Baker Rink this season is 10-6. With win in its last six games at home, Princeton is now 7-6 on home ice this season.
Throw the Puck at the Net
Princeton outshot both Clarkson and St. Lawrence when it last played and has outshot its opponent 20 times this year.
Non Conference Wrap
Princeton's win at Robert Morris was its final non-league game of the 2007-08 season. Princeton finished the year 3-4 in those games with wins at Yale, Neb.-Omaha and Robert Morris, and losses to Quinnipiac, Minnesota State and Notre Dame (2).
Ivy Player of the Year
Junior Lee Jubinville was named the Ivy League's Player of the Year. Jubinville is Princeton's second Ivy League Player of the Year in men's hockey. The only other winner, John Messuri, took home top honors in 1989.
First-Team All-Ivy
Junior Lee Jubinville and senior Mike Moore were both unanimous First-Team All-Ivy selections. It marks the fourth time that Princeton has placed two player on the Ivy League's first team. It also occurred in 1997-98 (Jeff Halpern and Steve Shirreffs), 1998-99 ((Jeff Halpern and Steve Shirreffs) and 1999-00 (Kirk Lamb and Darren Yopyk).
Second-Team All-Ivy
Junior Brett Wilson and sophomore Zane Kalemba also received second-team All-Ivy honors.
Princeton vs. Yale
Princeton has played more games against Yale than any other opponent, and will add at least two more games to that total this weekend. The teams have met 237 times with Yale holding a 119-99-9 series edge. Princeton leads the series 44-38-4 in games played at Baker Rink.
Recent History
Princeton has won all three meetings between the two this season. The Tigers opened the season with a 6-2 non-league win over Yale as sophomore Cam MacIntyre recorded a hat trick. Princeton came from behind to win the second meeting 4-3 in New Haven. Junior Lee Jubinville and freshman Mike Kramer each had a goal and an assist in the win. Princeton took the third meeting 4-2 at Baker Rink. Junior Brett Wilson had a goal and an assist in the win.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale is 15-12-4 overall and finished the league season 9-9-4. The Bulldogs finished the regular season seventh in the standings and swept 10th-seeded Rensselaer in first round of the playoffs, winning both games by a 3-2 scores in overtime.
Princeton vs. Yale in the Playoffs
Princeton and Yale have met twice in the playoffs with each team winning a game. Yale defeated Princeton 5-1 in December of 1990 in a first-round game at Baker Rink, while the Tigers edged Yale 2-1 in the semifinals of the 1998 ECAC Tournament in Lake Placid. That year Princeton won the ECAC Tournament as a seven-seed.
Completing the Series
Princeton has completed its league series' against all 11 ECAC Hockey opponents. Princeton swept Brown, Colgate, Cornell and Dartmouth and Yale, split with Harvard, Quinnipiac, Rensselaer and Union, and were swept by Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
Playoff Notes
Playoff Hosting
Princeton hosted a playoff series for just the second time in Tiger history last season against Brown. It was a first-round series that Princeton took in three games. Princeton has won both series and has a 4-2-1 playoff record on home ice. Princeton also hosted play-in games in 1991 and 1995. In 1991, the Tigers fell to Yale, and in 1995, Princeton defeated Union on its run to the ECAC Championship game.
Recent Playoff History
Last season Princeton was the sixth seed in the ECAC Tournament and hosted 11th-seeded Brown in the first round and won the series in three games, each being decided by a goal. The Tigers then advanced to the quarterfinals and fell to Dartmouth in two games.
Playoff Performance
Princeton is 16-36-1 in ECAC playoff action and is 4-2-1 in games played at home. Princeton last played in the quarterfinal round of the postseason last year and Princeton last made it to the championship weekend in 1999 when the Tigers fell in the semifinals to Clarkson and tied Rensselaer in the consolation game.
Balanced Effort
Princeton offense has been balanced all season as the Tigers' 94 goals have come from 20 different skaters. In addition, 21 of Princeton's 22 skaters have registered at least one point this season. Princeton also has 14 skaters with double-digit point totals.
Offense From the Back
With freshman Cam Ritchie's assist against Cornell, Princeton now has four defensemen with double-digit point totals. Princeton last accomplished that in the 1994-95 season.
Above .500
After starting last season 1-6-2, the Tigers finished out the season 14-10-1. With an 17-12 record this season, the Tigers are 31-22-1 over the last 54 games.
Ranked Teams
Princeton has faced six ranked teams this season and is 1-5 in those games. Princeton fell to Clarkson 6-2 and 4-3, Rensselaer 4-3 and Notre Dame 4-2 and 7-0. Princeton's win came over Harvard by a 2-1 score.
On the Horizon
The winner of this weekend's best-of-three quarterfinal series will advance to the ECAC Hockey semifinals next Friday at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Individual Notes
2-Schroeder-Solid and Steady
Sophomore defenseman Brad Schroeder has been Princeton's top defensive defenseman much of the season. Schroeder returned to the lineup last weekend and recorded an assist on junior Brett Wilson's goal at St. Lawrence.
3-Pederson-Almost Every Game
Sophomore Jody Pederson became the last player in the Princeton lineup to miss a game this season when an injury held him out of the Clarkson game. He returned the following night and had an assist at St. Lawrence. He now has 16 points this season.
4-Fedun-Top Defensive +/-
Freshman Taylor Fedun leads all Princeton defensemen with a +10 rating. He is tied for the team lead in the category with junior forwards Brett Wilson and Lee Jubinville.
6-Jubinville-Top of the List
Junior Lee Jubinville leads Princeton with 37 points this season. He was also the league's scoring champion this season with 31 points in 22 games, an average of 1.41 points per game. He is the third Tiger to reach the 30-point mark since the 2000-01 season. Dustin Sproat last did it with 35 points in 2004-05. Princeton's last 40-point scorer was Jeff Halpern, who tallied 44 points in 1998-99.
7-Ritchie-Offensive Stretch
Freshman defenseman Cam Ritchie became the fourth Princeton defenseman this season to reach double digits in points. Ritchie has assists in each of his last two games, including one at Clarkson, and now has 11 points this season. An injury kept him out of the lineup at St. Lawrence.
9-Bartlett-Double Digits
Sophomore Dan Bartlett notched an assist in Princeton's loss at Clarkson. It was hit 12th point of the season.
10-Stankievech-First Rhodes, Then Pyne
Senior Landis Stankievech was one of three Princeton students to receive a Rhodes Scholarship. Most recently he was awarded Princeton's Pyne Prize. The senior from Trochu, Alberta is the second Princeton hockey player to win the award, joining Mike Spence. Stankievech had an assist in Friday's win at Colgate.
11-Pridham-Senior Season
Senior Erik Pridham has points in two of his last seven games played, including a goal against Notre Dame and an assist at Nebraska-Omaha. He was in the lineup at St. Lawrence.
12-Lohry-Three Pointer
Freshman Kevin Lohry recorded his first three-point game with a goal and two assists against Colgate. He know has 10 points for the season.
14-Magnowski-Game Winners
Sophomore Mark Magnowski has scored seven goals this season and four have proven to be game winners. He added an assist in Princeton's win over Colgate.
15-Godlewski-First Year
Freshman Matt Godlewski has a goal and an assist in 26 games on the Tiger blueline. His goal came against Quinnipiac.
16-Wilson-Four Game Streak
Junior Brett Wilson has six points in his last four games, including an assist at Clarkson and a goal at St. Lawrence. The goal at St. Lawrence was his team-leading 13th of the season.
17-Kaiser-Back-to-Back Two-Point Games
Sophomore Kevin Kaiser had a goal and an assist against Colgate for his second consecutive two-point game. He also had a goal and an assist in the previous game at Dartmouth.
18-Beachell-Sophomore Season
Sophomore Tyler Beachell has a goal and an assist in 14 games played this season. His goal came against St. Lawrence.
19-Kushniruk-Adding Assists
Junior Brandan Kushniruk has assists in two of his last five games, including an assist on Kevin Kaiser's goal in Princeton's win at Dartmouth.
21-Moore-Captain's Contribution
Senior Mike Moore has points in six of his last seven games, including goals in both games the last weekend Princeton played at Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
22-Kramer-Great in '08
Freshman Mike Kramer has recorded 14 of his 15 points this season since the calendar turned to 2008. Kramer has five multiple-point games in 2008, including a three-point night in Princeton's win over Colgate.
23-Shattenkirk-Two More Points
Senior Keith Shattenkirk has recorded points in three of his last seven games. He scored in Princeton's win at RPI and had assists in the Brown and Yale wins.
25-Hagel-Game Winner
Senior Kyle Hagel netted his second goal of the season in the Yale win. The goal was the game winner. Hagel, a forward, dropped back to help Princeton's defense at St. Lawrence when injury held two Tigers defensemen out of the lineup.
26-Arhontas-Not at Double Digits
Freshman Matt Arhontas scored Princeton's first goal at Clarkson for his 10th point of the season and became the 14th Princeton player to reach double digits in points.
27-MacIntyre-Back Contributing
Sophomore Cam MacIntyre has an assist in each of the four games he has played since he returned to the lineup after missing three games because of injury. He had assists at Clarkson and St. Lawrence
28-Crane-Sophomore Season
Sophomore Kevin Crane has appeared in 12 games for Princeton this season.
30-Sychterz-Junior Season
Junior Thomas Sychterz last played in Princeton's loss at Union. He stopped both the shots he faced in 18:30 of action.
32-Kalemba-Busy Night
Sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba made 32 saves on Saturday night in a 3-2 loss at St. Lawrence. It was the second-highest save total of the season.
34-Reynolds-Freshman Year
Freshman Alan Reynolds last played in Princeton's win at Nebraska-Omaha. He made 11 saves in 28 minutes of action.
