Aemisegger Earns All-America Honors With 5th-Place Finish In NCAA 500
March 20, 2008 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Sophomore Alicia Aemisegger earned All-America honors for the second consecutive year to highlight the opening night of Princeton's women's swimming and diving NCAA Championship weekend. Aemisegger qualified for the 500 free final for the second straight year and placed third in 4:40.50. Aemisegger will join a handful of teammates in competition tomorrow at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion at The Ohio State University.
Aemisegger, a 2007 bronze medalist in the 500, qualified in a time of 4:39.69, which ranked second among all competitors. Through 200 yards, Aemisegger was in a tight battle for second place with Michigan junior Emily Brunermann. By that point, Florida senior Caroline Burckle grabbed total control of the race; she would go on to beat Janet Evans NCAA record with a winning time of 4:33.60. A pair of swimmers, Auburn's Maggie Bird and Texas A&M's Kristen Heiss, managed to pull ahead, but Aemisegger held off a trio of underclassmen for fifth place in the final.
Aemisegger earned Princeton 15 team points, and she will join teammates Brett Shiflett, Courtney Kilkuts, Lisa Hamming, Meredith Monroe and Justina DiFazio during a full day of Princeton competition Friday. The seventh member of the Princeton NCAA team, Monika Friedman, will compete in her individual event Saturday. Several swimmers also competed in Thursday prelims, including Kilkuts in the 200 IM, but only Aemisegger qualified for the final.
