Undefeated Tigers Host Cornell Saturday In Ivy League Opener
March 27, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
The Princeton women's lacrosse team couldn't have fared any better in its pre-Ivy League schedule. The Tigers hope for the same kind of success in league play
beginning Saturday when Cornell visits Class of 1952 Stadium for Princeton's Ivy opener. Opening draw is 3:05 p.m., and the game will be televised live by CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV).
The Tigers (6-0) have won 20 consecutive games against Cornell and haven't lost to the Big Red in Princeton since the 1985 season. Cornell's last win in the series came in 1988, before any of Princeton's current freshman players were born.
Princeton is one of just three teams overall in NCAA Division I that will enter Saturday without a loss (Northwestern and Old Dominion are the others). The Tigers also moved up to the No. 2 spot in the IWLCA poll this week behind only Northwestern.
Head coach Chris Sailer's team is the only Ivy team that has yet to play a league game entering Saturday, but each of Princeton's next six games beginning Saturday is an Ivy League game.
Christine Casaceli's goal with 2.7 seconds left in regulation gave the Tigers an 8-7 win over then-No. 2 Virginia last Saturday. The win was Princeton's first over UVa in the regular season since 2004 and gave the Tigers victories over teams ranked No. 2 and No. 3 (Duke) this season at the time of the game.
Cornell (4-3, 1-1) won its first four games this season but has now lost three straight, including a 7-6 defeat against Penn last Saturday in a game that the Big Red led 4-2 at halftime. Courtney Farrell, a senior, ranks third in the Ivy League in scoring this season. She has 28 points (13 goals and 15 assists) in Cornell's first seven games.
